Abstract
Hand hygiene practice and belief of healthcare professionals have an important place in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. The aim of this study is to determine the factors affecting the hand hygiene beliefs and practices of surgical and emergency service team members. The sample of the descriptive and cross-sectional study consisted of 437 people working in the emergency services and surgical units of a hospital located on the European side of Istanbul between 7 June and 15 August 2021. The data of this study were collected with personal information form, hand hygiene belief scale and hand hygiene practice inventory. Descriptive statistics, Independent groups t, Mann-Whitney U test, One-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Dunn-Bonferroni test, Pearson correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. The mean age of the surgical and emergency service team members was 28.62±5.19 years, 63.4% were women, 62.9% were nurses, 65.9% were undergraduates, and the average of their professional experience was 5.53 It was found that ±4.98 years and the average working time in the unit he worked was 2.79 years. It was determined that the surgical and emergency service team members scored a total of 82.41±10.38 points from the Hand Hygiene Belief Scale and a total of 66.13±5.47 points from the Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the age, professional experience, duration of work in the unit, and the total scores of the scales of the surgical and emergency service team members, while there was a statistically negative correlation between the number of monthly shifts, the average number of patients in the unit they worked, and the average number of patients cared for. Has been determined (p<0,05). It was determined that the factors preventing the hand hygiene of the surgical and emergency service team members were lack of materials, lack of time for hand washing and skin problems (p<0,05). As a result of this research, it was found that the hand hygiene practices and beliefs of the surgical and emergency service team members were high. It is recommended that the research be repeated in different samples with different variables. Keywords: Emergency service, Surgical team members, Hand hygiene belief, Hand hygiene practice
