Abstract
In this study, the relationship of attitudes towards dating violence with self-compassion and depression levels in adults was examined. 401 people (148 men and 253 women) participated in the study. The mean age of the participants was 30.32±6.71. Sociodemographic information form, Attitudes towards Violence in Close Relationships Questionnaire, Self-Compassion Scale and Beck Depression Inventory were applied to those who agreed to participate in the study. Statistical analysis methods were used to test the data collected in the study. Independent sample t-test and ANOVA were used to compare groups. Pearson Correlation and Hierarchical Regression Analysis were applied to examine the relationship between attitudes towards dating violence, self-compassion and depression. In addition, the mediating role of self-compa*ssion in the relationship between attitudes towards dating violence and depression was also analyzed. According to the findings obtained in the study, significant differences were found in attitudes towards dating violence, depression and self-compassion scores in terms of gender, income, marital status and relationship status. In addition, a negative and significant relationship was found between self-compassion and attitudes towards dating violence, abuse sub-scale and depression. A positive and significant relationship was found in the depression scores of the participants with the attitudes towards dating violence, abuse and violence sub-dimensions. Participants' attitudes towards dating violence were significantly predicted by self-compassion and depression scores. According to the mediator role analysis findings, it was determined that the mediating effect of self- understanding was significant in the relationship between the attitudes towards dating violence and the depression scores of the abuse sub-dimension. The research findings provide important findings in terms of understanding the risk and protective factors associated with attitudes towards dating violence. It is thought that the findings can be benefited from in the fields of research and practice and supported by further studies.
