Abstract
Football is the most popular sport in the world. Football is a sport that stimulates not only simple technical elements, but also motor and cognitive development, especially attention skills. Stroop test is one of the cognitive tests that frequently used in dual task paradigms. Stroop test is a neuropsychological evaluation which commonly used in perceptual velocity and executive functions. The aim of this study is evaluate the cognitive performance of young individuals and sedentary individuals who play professional football, present the relationship of regular physical activity with cognitive abilities and take attention to the development of cognitive performance with physical exercises. Voluntary professional male soccer players and sedentary males 16 and older years of age were included in the study. 94 participants were included in the study such that 47 in both two groups. An evaluation form was filled for the participants. Height and weight values were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. The physical activity levels of the participants were evaluated by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Cognitive performance was determined by Stroop TBAG test. At the end of the study, Stroop1 and Stroop5 times of the football players were significantly lower. There was a significant and positive correlation between BMI and age in football players. Significant and positive correlations were found between Stroop1 and age in football players and sedentary males. There was a significant and positive correlation between Stroop5 and age in sedentary males. Finally, it was concluded that football players have higher cognitive performance than sedentary individuals. Key Words: Cognition; Cognitive function; Stroop testing; Football; Exercise
