Mainly the most often encountered complications are related to the retention mechanism. Generally, there is an agreement about no observable effect of the attachment design on the incidence of maintenance requirements. Other maintenance requirements would be periodic adjustment of occlusal contacts, changing of artificial teeth, and elimination of possible sore spots. Additionally, in implant-assisted prostheses, peri-implant complications such as periimplantitis may occur from time to time. Although there is a very high success rate, it would be advisable to inform patients thoroughly from the beginning about probable complications as well as expected maintenance requirements and the costs in order to avoid unpleasant confrontations.
