(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Celik, Ozlem
ObjectivesThe primary aim of this research is to investigate the effects of having a sibling with intellectual disability on the individual and social lives of typically developing young adult siblings, as interpreted through their own perspectives.MethodsThis study was designed using the phenomenological approach, a qualitative research method, to explore the perspectives of typically developing young adult siblings on the effects of having a sibling with intellectual disability on their individual and social lives. The study group for this research was determined using criterion sampling, a subtype of purposeful sampling.ResultsThe findings of our study suggest that the typically developing young adult sibling tends to have fewer friends, leading to potential feelings of loneliness and social isolation, which may ultimately foster a more introverted personality.ConclusionsTypically developing young adult siblings of individuals with ID often experience unique and multifaceted challenges that significantly influence various dimensions of their lives.
