Article Citation Count: 3Effects of the Folk Medicinal Plant Extract Ankaferd BloodStopper on the Healing of Colon Anastomosis: An Experimental Study in a Rat Model(Kare Publ, 2019) Ekici, Ugur; Ferhatoglu, Murat Ferhat; Citgez, Bulent; Uludag, MehmetObjectives: Ankaferd BloodStopper (ABS) is a topical hemostatic agent that modulates the inflammatory response and accelerates wound healing. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of ABS on the colon anastomosis wound healing in a rat model. Methods: Thirty-two Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups as follows: Group A (n= 8), left colonic anastomosis plus ABS treatment (sacrificed on the 3rd day); Group B (n= 8) (control), left colonic anastomosis (sacrificed on the 3rd day); Group C (n= 8), left colonic anastomosis plus ABS treatment (sacrificed on the 7th day); and Group D (n= 8) (control), left colonic anastomosis (sacrificed on the 7th day). All rats were sacrificed at the end of the experiment to assess the anastomosis integrity and the presence of perianastomosis abscesses, peritonitis, and adhesions. Additionally, the bursting pressure and hydroxyproline (OH-pyroline) levels were determined, and a histopathologic evaluation of the perianastomosis tissue was conducted. Results: The mean bursting pressure on Day 7 was significantly higher than that on Day 3 in the ABS group (p=0.017). Overall, the bursting pressure was higher in animals treated with ABS than in the control animals, although the difference was not statistically significant. The OH-pyroline levels of both ABS groups were significantly higher than in the control groups. The mean OH-pyroline level on Day 7 was higher than that on Day 3 in the ABS-treated animals (p=0.038). Conclusion: ABS increases collagen formation and neovascularization, and it has a positive impact during the colon anastomosis healing in an experimental model of wound healing.Article Citation Count: 0Thyroid hemiagenesis: a case report(Turkish Surgical Assoc, 2019) Citgez, Bulent; Yetkin, Gurkan; Uludag, Mehmet; Akgun, Ismail; Kartal, Abdulcabbar; Ferhatoglu, Ferhat; Akcakaya, AdemThyroid hemiagenesis is a rare entity in the literature. Developmental hemi-thyroid anomalies can result from either an abnormal descent or an agenesis of one lobe of the thyroid gland. This study aimed at presenting a thyroid hemiagenesis case incidentally diagnosed by neck ultrasonography (USG), who had complaints of pain and swelling in the neck. USG examination revealed lack of left thyroid lobe and multiple nodules in the right lobe. Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) showed follicular neoplasia, and right subtotal thyroidectomy was performed. We report the rarity of the condition and emphasize the role of imaging techniques in preoperative diagnosis and subsequent management.Article Citation Count: 0Two tumors of the same cytological origin: are they two different tumors or a differentiation of one to another?(Edizioni Minerva Medica, 2019) Ferhatoglu, Murat F.; Citgez, BulentBACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to evaluate patients who had follicular adenoma detected in the pathologic examination of total thyroidectomy operations performed within 5 years and to investigate the relation between follicular adenoma and papillary carcinoma which are two different diseases developed from the same cytologic origin. METHODS: The data of 107 patients diagnosed with follicular adenoma among 1331 patients who underwent bilateral total thyroidectomy due to multinodular goiter diagnosis between January 2008 and January 2013 were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: 82.2% of the patients were female, mean age was 51.04 +/- 13.01(19-83). It was found that patients with follicular adenoma were more likely to have incidental papillary thyroid cancer and 21 (61.7%) patients with follicular adenoma-papillary thyroid carcinoma together had in the contralateral thyroid lobe. CONCLUSIONS: We determined that incidental papillary thyroid cancer risk was significantly higher in follicular adenoma cases with multinodular goiter. Therefore, we think that bilateral total thyroidectomy should be preferred in multinodular goiter cases with preoperative fine needle aspiration cytology of follicular neoplasia.
