The Problem of the National Identity and Language in Wilhelm von Humboldt's Philosophy: The Road Through the Foreigness to the Undivided Unity

As one of the most important philosophers in 19th century, Humboldt considers in additions to other subject matters- the relation between the language and nation in The Heterogenity of Language and its Influence on the Intellectual Development of Mankind [Uber die Verschiedenheit des menschlichen Sprachbaues und ihren Einfluss auf die geistige Entwicklung des Menschengeschlechts]. The study deals with the analysis of Humboldt's work from the perspective of the national identity and language problem. The analysis is based on the notion of Benedict Anderson's "imagined communities". Although specific notions, topoi, such as building national identity and homogeneity; rewriting the history; building a national mind and difference; othering and the role of the language in nation building will not be the focus point of this study, but they will form the framework for the analysis.

Translating the concept of nationalism: A general approach on the discourse of natianalism in Turkish

The aim of the present paper is to discuss the translation of the concept of nationalism and to explore the possibilities of importing methods from Begriffsgeschichte [history of concepts] to be applied in researches focusing on the translation of this concept within Translation Studies. Begriffsgeschichte was a reaction to classical research in social history and became an autonomous field therein. The paper will first introduce the history of this discipline with its main concerns. Thereafter, the paper will discuss how methods and approaches from Begriffsgeschichte can be made useful for theoretical as well as methodological questions regarding the translations of concepts in Translation Studies. This paper is based on the assumption that studies in the translation of concepts in Turkey will contribute to discussions on the importation of Western models of thought during the modernization process in Turkey.
