Article Citation Count: 6The Acute Effects of Different Intensity Whole-Body Vibration Exposure on Muscle Tone and Strength of the Lower Legs, and Hamstring Flexibility: A Pilot Study(Human Kinetics Publ inc, 2021) Atıcı, Emine; Atici, Emine; Rezaei, Derya Azim; Ozturk, Ozgul; Uslu, Burcu; Ozcan, Burcu Ates; Okudan, Begum; Fizyoterapi ve Rehabilitasyon / Physiotherapy and RehabilitationContext: The research on the change in properties of the lower leg muscles by different intensity sinusoidal vertical whole-body vibration (SV-WBV) exposures has not yet been investigated. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine effect of a 20-minute different intensity SV-WBV application to the ankle plantar flexor and dorsiflexor muscles properties and hamstring flexibility. Design: Prospective preintervention-postintervention design. Setting: Physiotherapy department. Participants: A total of 50 recreationally active college-aged individuals with no history of a lower leg injury volunteered. Interventions: The SV-WBV was applied throughout the session with an amplitude of 2 to 4 mm and a frequency of 25 Hz in moderate-intensity vibration group and 40 Hz in a vigorous-intensity vibration group. Main Outcome Measures: The gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscle tone was assessed with MyotonPRO, and the strength evaluation was made on the same lower kg muscles using hand-held dynamometer. The sit and reach test was used for the lower leg flexibility evaluation. Results: The gastrocnemius muscle tone decreased on the right side (d = 0.643, P = .01) and increased on the left (d = 0.593, P = .04) when vigorous-intensity vibration was applied. Bilateral gastrocnemius muscle strength did not change in both groups (P> .05). Without differences between groups, bilateral tibialis anterior muscle strength increased in both groups (P < .01). Bilateral gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscle tone did not change in the moderate-intensity vibration group (P> .05). Flexibility increased in both groups (P < .01); however, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (d = 0.169, P = .55). Conclusions: According to study results, if SV-WBV is to be used in hamstring flexibility or ankle dorsiflexor muscle strengthening, both vibration exposures should be preferred. Different vibration programs could be proposed to increase ankle plantar flexor muscle strength in the acute results. Vigorous-intensity vibration exposure is effective in altering ankle plantar flexor muscle tone, but it is important to be aware of the differences between the lower legs.Article Citation Count: 3Adverse Effect of Emotional Eating Developed During the COVID-19 Pandemic on Healthy Nutrition, a Vicious Circle: A cross-sectional descriptive study(Asoc Espanola Dietistas Nutricionistas, 2021) Ozcan, Burcu Ates; Yeslikaya, BurcuIntroduction: Because of the new type of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) seen worldwide, many countries have a difficult time both in terms of health and economy. It is thought that infection and fear of death owing to the disease may cause a disturbance in the individuals' psychology. Moreover, precautions such as social distancing and quarantine to prevent the spread of the disease and the prolongation of these interventions may further aggravate the conditions, such as mood disorders and stress. This study was aimed to determine the emotional eating status of individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic and to determine its effect on a healthy eating attitude. Material and methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study with a total number of 578 adults without COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment (422 [73%] women, 156 [27%] men). The study was conducted using the Google Forms web survey platform. The link to the survey was shared via WhatsApp and Instagram. The participants were asked to share the study link to reach out to as many potential participants as possible throughout the nation using the method known as snowball sampling. A questionnaire form which includes sociodemographic characteristics, the Turkish version of the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ-TR), and the Attitude Scale for Healthy Nutrition (ASHN) were applied to the participants. EEQ-TR and ASHN forms were answered twice, retrospectively for the pre-COVID period and prospectively during the COVID period. Results: While average emotional eating scores increased compared to pre-COVID-19 scores, individuals shifted from low-level emotional eaters to emotional eaters (p < 0.000). On the other hand, the average ASHN scores decreased, and individuals shifted from the middle-level healthy eating attitude to a low level (p < 0.000). As the quarantine period increased, emotional eating, body weight, and body mass index (BMI) increased, and healthy eating attitude decreased (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Individuals' emotional eating increased due to social distancing, self-quarantine, or isolation in the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes are found to be effective in healthy eating in a negative way. Long-term unhealthy eating is not recommended for people's health. Therefore, it is necessary to inform individuals about stress management, healthy nutrition, the importance of regular exercise, and sleep patterns.Article Citation Count: 0Determining the relationship of diet quality with weight change, body mass index, and depression in women who had undergone sleeve gastrectomy: A cross-sectional descriptive study(Asoc Espanola Dietistas Nutricionistas, 2021) Agbaba, Neslihan; Ozcan, Burcu Ates; Oren, GurdalIntroduction: This study aims to determine the relationship of diet quality in women with weight change, body mass index (BMI), and depression one year after undergoing sleeve gastrectomy. Material and Methods:This is a cross-sectional descriptive study with 62 women aged 18-65 years who underwent sleeve gastrectomy in a private hospital and completed their first postoperative year. The participants were asked to fill a questionnaire on 3-day food consumption record, sociodemographic characteristics, and nutritional status; beck depression inventory (BDI) was applied. Mean adequacy ratio (MAR) was used to evaluate diet quality. Results: The mean age was 33.6 +/- 9.5 years. The mean MAR score was 76.0 +/- 31.8, and the mean BDI score was 8.2 +/- 6.4. The excess weight loss rate was high in patients with good diet quality, and the BMI and depression scores were low (P-EWL,P- BMI > 0.05, P-Beck < 0.001). Diet quality was found to be negatively correlated with body weight, BMI and depression scores and positively correlated with excess weight loss. Conclusions: Enhancing the diet quality can help patients in overcoming postoperative depression and increasing the success of weight loss. Particularly intense and strenuous working conditions in academicians can increase burnout and decrease quality of life by negatively affecting health. Objectives: The study was conducted to examine the burnout level, eating behaviors, and quality of life of academicians and to reveal the relationship between these parameters. Methods: 194 academicians who accepted to participate voluntarily in the study were included. A questionnaire form about the sociodemographic characteristics, Dutch Eating Behaviors Questionnaire (DEBQ), Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey, and Quality of Life Questionnaire -Short Form (SF-36) were applied to the participants. Results: Emotional eating score has positive relationships with emotional burnout and depersonalization and has a negative relationship with personal success (p >= 0.05). The emotional eating score has positive meaningless relationships with physical function and social functionality which are sub-parameters of quality of life. While positive relationships between personal success and all parameters other than the pain from the quality of life sub-parameters are observed. Conclusions: Emotional eating and burnout can have negative effects on the academicians' quality of life. Taking precautions to increase healthy nutrition and physical activity in academic staff and being directed by experts in their field can be effective in preventing this problem.Article Citation Count: 8Factors affecting diet quality in adolescents: the effect of sociodemographic characteristics and meal consumption(Mattioli 1885, 2020) Ozcan, Burcu Ates; Yesilkay, Burcu; Yaldiz, Nihan; Pehliva, MerveBackground: Determining the quality of diet in individuals and having a good understanding of the factors affecting it would be essential in understanding the means to improve diet quality. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the diet quality and the factors affecting the diet quality of middle adolescents using the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED). Methods: In total, 550 adolescents aged 14-18 years participated in the study. Individuals who voluntarily participated completed the KIDMED scale and a questionnaire that investigated the demographic and general characteristics, eating habits, and anthropometric measurements. Of the participants, 57.5% were girls and 42.5% were boys. The mean KIDMED score of the participants was 5.12 +/- 2.40. A model was created based on age, sex, number of main meals and snacks, BMI, income level, and education level of the parents, which were considered to have an effect on KIDMED. Increase in the BMI increased the KIDMED score by 0.057 units; additionally, the score increased in women by 0.550 units, in individuals with an income that was higher than their expenses by 1.245 units, in cases when the participant's mother had a graduate-level education by 1.541 units, and in cases when the participant's father had a high school diploma level education by 0.621 units. In total, 75.2% of the KIDMED score was explained through these variables. Results: According to the study data, diet quality of the adolescents was at a medium level, and diet quality was affected by the family income, parental education level, gender, number of meals, and BMI. Conclusions: These results show the need for intervention programs that consider the general and sociodemographic characteristics of the individuals and their families, as well as other factors such as healthy eating habits and body weight.Article Citation Count: 2Knowledge, attitude, and behaviour of physical education and sports students' about dietary supplements(Mattioli 1885, 2020) Pehlivan, Leyla Tevfikoglu; Ozcan, Burcu Ates; Erem, Sinem; Ercan, Aydan; Akkaya, Izel; Basarir, AylinStudy Objectives: This study was carried out to determine the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of sports students' about dietary supplements. Method: This study was carried out voluntarily by applying face-to-face questionnaires with 145 students aged 18-25, 37.9% female, and 62.1% male, studying at Trakya University School of Physical Education and Sports. 'The questionnaire includes demographic information of the participants, information and use of dietary supplements, and anthropometric measurements. Results: 45.5% of the students used dietary support, and the rate of dietary support usage of males (30.3%) was higher than dietary support usage of females (15.2%) (p>0.05). It was found that 11.7% of the students received information from doctors / dieticians, 13.8% from trainers, and 18.6% from other sources (internet, television, friends) (p <0.05). It was determined that the students mostly heard about branched chain amino acids, amino acids, and coenzyme Q(10) dietary supplements and they tried and quit products such as protein powder, multivitamin, and n-3 fatty acids. Participants stated that they mostly used caffeine, protein powder, and n-3 fatty acid supplements. 'The majority of the students stated that dietary supplements provide energy, do not benefit in irregular use, affect performance when used with physical activity, excessive protein supplements or any supplements to increase muscle mass will be beneficial, even if they are fed adequate and balanced nutrition, they should take supplements or in excess doses. They also stated that they do not have sufficient information about the label information of dietary supplements and their harmful effects in long-term use. Conclusion: Sports students got information about dietary supplements from the internet and their friends. There is a need for more widespread information about the correct use of individuals who do sports by obtaining information from correct sources, specific to the individual and under appropriate conditions.Article Citation Count: 0The Relationship of Hedonic Hunger With Depression and Physical Activity in Students of Faculty of Health Sciences(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2022) Akkaya, Kamile Uzun; Uslu, Burcu; Ozcan, Burcu AtesThe study was conducted to examine the hedonic hunger, physical activity, and depression status of healthy university students and to reveal the relationship between these parameters. A total of 174 healthy university students were included in the study. Hedonic hunger responses were similar at different physical activity levels. When the relationship between individuals' hedonic hunger responses and intensity of depression was examined, it was found that there was a weak positive correlation between them. Hedonic hunger can have negative effects on university students' depression status. Taking precautions to improve nutrition and physical activity in university students can be effective in preventing this problem.
