Conference Object Citation Count: 0The complaints about Cebeci̇ quarries that have been notified to İstanbul Metropoli̇tan Municipality(2012) Çubukçu,A.; Kaya,E.; Ozyaral,O.In the district of Sultangazi Borough Cebeci Quarries, 16agregate quarries are in service. It has been detected that the areas, in which the quarries of Cebeci district are operating, are getting closer to each other in general, some of them are nested, production actions of the quarries are usually taking place in vertical axis, in the majority of the quarries stair, bench system's can not be formed, in terms of slope stability some kind of risks occured and because licensed areas are small, there are not enough or no quarry area, areas where excess earths and stones from excavations are dumped and storage for pruducts, and also with the rise of settlement in the area, quarries are placed in Cebeci village and Cebeci neighborhood and these causes local people to complain about noise because of the irregular blasting. All the complaints that have been notified to Istanbul Municipality since 2008 were compiled and the result of statistics revealed that nearly %50 of complainers have been negatively effected by quarries close to settlement areas, without neccesary permissions, illegal and not working suitable to mining ethics. That the noise and ground vibration complaints caused by blasting are increased in summer months (April-October) and that this was caused by dense operations of the sites in these months were also observed. Observations are conducted as on-field researches in Cebeci region.Negative effects on local people and damages to environment created by blasting operationsin quarries were examined through a survey research. With the changes in explosive material and blasting system and measuring the blastings with 2 ground vibration measuring device and reporting, noise and vibration complaints caused by blasting were overcome to a large extent. © SGEM2012 All Rights Reserved by the International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference SGEM Published by STEF92 Technology Ltd.Conference Object Citation Count: 0Effect of environmental policies on costs and profitabilityof company in purchasing decisions of healthcare institutions(2009) Yarar, Onur; Yarar,O.; Ozyaral,O.; Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı / Mouth and Dental HealthThe theory of corporate social responsibility promotes, without regarding sector differences, all corporations not to consider only economic and financial issue, but also stakeholders as well as social and environmental burdens born to community where the company operates. The Neo-classic model of corporate social responsibility recommends companies to obey moral minimum while seeking maximum profits and within this context, the model advises particularly to integrate corporate social responsibility into purchasing strategies1. Healthcare institutions, which are required to be a role model, should have a duty which encompasses creating profit in one side and behaving more carefully in terms of social and environmental responsibility and those institutions should follow particular implementations to balance financial performance with social responsibility. Superior model of sustainable development emphasizes the necessity that businesses should have rational behavior and ethical responsibility for use of resources in acceptable rates and compensating resultant losses. A company is strictly subject to the duty that it has to ensure company operations are ecologically sustainable. Primary requisite of this implementation is that healthcare institutions should be subjected to legal, financial and reputation risks due to their anti-environmental acts. When many financial factor related to corporatre social responsibility are summed, they have qualifications to ensure rational decision makers voluntarily accept said factor set. Environmentally preferable purchasing is a product/service purchasing activity whereby environmental impacts are considered and found to cause less damage on environment and human health when compared with competitor products/services. It also includes a gradual and continuous process where a hospital continually reviews and expands scope of efforts for selecting environmentally substantial, healthy and safe products. Environmentally preferable purchasing provides significant cost savings in economical aspects for healthcare institutions such as reducing overheads, avoiding waste and decreasing responsibility and professional health costs and thus, it creates positive effect on profitability. In this study, economic benefits provided due to integration of social values into purchasing activities by healthcare institutions, which should be a model in terms of social responsibility and environmental conscience, are investigated and modest recommendations on this issue are developed. © 2009 All Rights Reserved by the International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference SGEM Printed in Sofia, Bulgaria.Conference Object Citation Count: 3Enviroment problems caused by cebeci̇ aggregate quarries and rehabilitation works(2012) Çubukçu,A.; Kaya,E.; Ozyaral,O.16 Agregate quarries are working in Sultangazi district, Cebeci Aggregate Quarries zone. It is detected that as a result of blasting in these quarries, a high amount of vibration and noise occurred in these regions; dust emission resulted from rock crushers, crushing, sifting and conveyor lines as well as irregular stock piling and transportation; as a result of lack of space, it is observed that open quarry layers could not be established and deep holes were opened as a result; also as a result of upper layer of earth and cover molding taken irregularly, uncontrolled and applied without a project in order to mine inside or outside of the permitted area resulted in rise of ground level and visual pollution. Thanks to rehabilitations applied in the facilities, adjustments in level of drilling and blasting operations and blasting level are made and problem of vibration or noise resulted from blasting are solved. Lines, sifters and crushing equipment in quarries were covered and with pulverization systems with water support, along with covering roads with asphalt, leveling and forestation in the region, cleaning and washing roads are also applied in order to reduce dust emission partially. © SGEM2012 All Rights Reserved by the International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference SGEM Published by STEF92 Technology Ltd.Conference Object Citation Count: 0The lung canser and mesothelioma in towns with environmental exposure to erionite in the cappadocian region, Turkey(2010) Çubukçu,A.; Kaya,E.; Albayrak,M.; Ozyaral,O.Our previous study demonstrated the presence of environmental erionite fiber exposure in The Tuzköy town in Nevşehir located in the Cappadocian Region, Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate whether environmental erionite exposure increases the incidence of lung cancer and mesothelioma. Method: One hundred and ninty-two deaths from mesothelioma and lung cancer living in the center or in the towns of Nevşehir were retrospectively (between 1999 and 2003) analyzed. The mortality of lung cancer and mesothelioma were calculated. Results: The mortality of lung cancer and mesothelioma were 162 and 30, respectively, for the whole population of Nevşehir; while they were 2 and 14 in the Tuzköy. The incidence was strikingly high for mesothelioma in the Tuzköy, another town in Nevşehir where an analysis for erionite could not be performed. The mortality from mesothelioma in the Tuzköy was 87.5% and it was approximately 50% of Nevşehir's mortality related to mesothelioma. Conclusion: The mortality of mesothelioma and lung cancer in the Tuzköy were higher than those of the general population in Turkey, suggesting a role of environmental erionite exposure in lung cancer and mesothelioma.Conference Object Citation Count: 0Perception of environmental health and social responsibility education by university students(2010) Ozyaral,O.; Çubukçu,A.; Kaya,E.Being inherited from 20th century and having increasingly negative effect on our lives, environmental problem had became inevitable part of our life. However employmentand development-related issues had led several governments to defer the subject. Countries including United States, China, India, Brazil, Turkey and Australia are not eager against international environmental regulations. Private sectors of several third world countries may threat governments and non-governmental organization to cease their business activities or to shift their investments to other countries due to fear that efforts and expenditures made for environment, which is in fact a corporate social responsibility subject, will adversely affect their competitive advantages. Concurrently, as non-governmental organizations of said countries regard the issue such that it is not substantial subject of present time, principal problem of present age is development, responsibility of this problem should be undertaken by developed countries as due to very nature of the problem, the matter is arising from activities of developed countries, said organizations are avoid from encouraging companies and governments for being active on environmental issues. A similar approach related to present subject can be also observed in attitudes of EU member states against membership process of candidate states. Member States are not very willing to follow environmental regulations although they are very sensitive about implementing Copenhagen criteria against candidate states and even Member States provide a transition period for candidates on those topics. Environmental problem is such complex that it cannot be resolved by ordinary solutions. It requires problem solvers to have a vision on this subject as well as corporate approaches and policies to undertake a mission for creating a focus in relation with implementing the vision. Ability to create a common environmental awareness throughout the community is related with cultural transformation. Most effective tool for cultural transformation is education. Aim of this study is to reveal changes in social responsibility perceptions of university students on environmental health and policies caused by the course titled "Environmental Health and Environmental Responsibility". In the study, focus group discussion work method among qualitative research methods will be used and resultant findings are supported by observation findings. In the study, 10 focus groups, each consisting of five students and one moderator, are used; factors with effect on environmental awareness of students are observed. © SGEM2010 All Rights Reserved by the International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference SGEM Published by STEF92 Technology Ltd.Conference Object Citation Count: 0Second nature: Building up healing gardens for disable kids and geriatric individuals(2010) Ozyaral,O.; Şahin,E.; Kaya,E.[No abstract available]Conference Object Citation Count: 0Use of environmental preference in purchasing decisions healthcare institutions(2009) Yarar, Onur; Yarar,O.; Tükel,A.; Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı / Mouth and Dental HealthBiggest challenge experienced by hospitals in 21st century is integrating social values into business operations. Corporate Social Responsibility is a term used for determining responsibility of a healthcare institute whereby the institute not only takes financial economic dimension in decision-making process, but it also considers social and environmental consequences.1 Healthcare institutions are required to invest socially responsible manner; this term is related with use of money in accordance with social and ethical targets. Consequently, healthcare institutions should be socially responsible not only from shareholders and employees, but also from all parties including future generations affected from operations of the institution. In a study where potential risks for healthcare institutions are investigated, corporate social responsibility level and extent of environmental sensitivity in decision-making for purchasing a good or service were revealed as a significant assessment for consumers and employees of company2. Considering healthcare institutions, strategies taking environmental and social aspects into account for purchasing decisions should be implemented and the institutions neglecting those strategies should be exposed to financial, legal and reputation risks due to their anti-environmental acts. At initiation phase for implementing environmentally preferable purchasing in healthcare institutions, policies and procedures compatible with environment should be incorporated. Individual who will ensure that those policies are followed and how they will be held responsible (for example, regular reporting) should be determined in writing monitoring those policies and how those individuals will be considered and thus, an audit process should be developed where concurrent performance will be regularly reviewed. However, it is obvious that training requirement healthcare personnel responsible from purchasing services on environmentalist policies should be fulfilled. Training is critical part of implementation. In this study, integration of social values into purchasing activities by healthcare institutions, which should be a model in terms of social responsibility and environmental conscience, is evaluated and modest recommendations on this issue are developed. © 2009 All Rights Reserved by the International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference SGEM Printed in Sofia, Bulgaria.Conference Object Citation Count: 0Use of radioactive substances at hospitals and the environmental effects thereof(2013) Ozyaral,O.; Kalmuk,G.; Kaya,E.Advancing technologies bring ease and comfort to our lives and help us to reach results rapidly, but the pollution of nature and environment caused by these developments increase rapidly with each passing day to threaten human health. Wastes of medical institutions that contain radioactive substances include unused excess liquids for radiotherapy or laboratory research purposes, contaminated glassware, packages or absorbing papers, radioactive sources without protective packaging, wastes that are extracted from patients kept in protective packaging such as urine and/or stools, and other sources of similar nature. This study was carried out as a descriptive study with the aim to identify the compliance of radiation safety in our country with national and international laws, legislations, and regulations as well as the awareness of radiation safety among health personnel, by means of surveys carried out with the personnel of hospitals and imaging centers located in the province of Istanbul along with other provinces. Through random sampling, we selected 200 employees among the personnel working at radiology units, nuclear medicine centers, angiography departments of certain public or private hospitals or at private imaging centers located in Istanbul or other provinces of Turkey, and carried out surveys about 'Socio-demographic Characteristics' and 'Personnel's Awareness Level about the Use and Wastes of Radioactive Substances'. Cronbach's Alpha value, as the scale's reliability coefficient, was.948 for the overall scale, and varied between.907-.922 for the three sub-factors. The obtained data were assessed by means of number-percentage calculations, arithmetic means, and standard deviation comparisons, along with independent group T-tests and Chi-Square tests. © SGEM2013 All Rights Reserved by the International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference SGEM.
