Book Part 1.02 - Polyphenols, Bioavailability and Potency(Elsevier, 2022) Ozdal,T.; Kamiloglu,S.Polyphenols are plant secondary metabolites comprising of a large class of compounds, which can be broadly classified as flavonoids including flavonols, flavones, flavanones, flavanols, isoflavones, anthocyanins and non-flavonoids including phenolic acids, tannins, stilbenes, and lignans. Polyphenols have important health-promoting effects according to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties, among others. Importantly, the health-promoting effect of polyphenols greatly depend on their bioaccessibility and bioavailability in the digestive tract and circulatory system. Due to their consequences for bioavailability and human health, the interactions between dietary components, particularly phenolic compounds and gut microbiota, have gained significant attention. An overview of the reciprocal relationship between all subclasses of phenolic compounds and gut microbiota is presented in this chapter, as well as the importance of such interactions to bioavailability and human health. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. In the first part, a special focus is on Uighur Turkish in Central Asia (Old Turkic period, 9th century), followed by Anatolian Turkish developed in Asia Minor since the 11th century (West Turkic). Due to insufficient historical research and data on translation within the paradigm of Translation Studies, the report will not scan translational terms/concepts in Qarakhanid, Qharezm and Chagatai Turkish, which are members of East Turkic tradition. In the second part, the report reviews translation as concept and practice, focusing especially on the Turkish literary discourse of the late 19th century since this era is a period of the Turks' encounter with Europe, hence, a period of shifting civilization from the East to the West, which led to a change in translation conception (see Paker 2006; Demircioǧlu 2005). © 2019 John Benjamins Publishing Company.Book Part Alveolar and anterior maxillary distraction in patients with orofacial clefts(wiley, 2023) Motro,M.; Erverdi,N.; Acar,Y.B.Distraction osteogenesis is a commonly used process in the treatment of patients with craniofacial disorders, especially in those with cleft lip and palate (CLP) having severe maxillary deficiency. This chapter discusses the use of alveolar distraction osteogenesis in the treatment of CLP with large defects. Major goals in the treatment of CLP include achieving labial, palatal, and velopharyngeal closure; a balanced profile; a harmonious facial appearance; and a good occlusion. One of the most critical aspects in the preparation of the dental arch for alveolar distraction osteogenesis is creating enough space to facilitate interdental vertical osteotomies. Compared to tooth-borne appliances, bone-anchored systems can present challenges in positioning the distraction device with the correct force vector. Bone-anchored distraction appliances are often preferred over tooth-borne systems when segmental anterior maxillary distraction is required and may also be used as an alternative to tooth-borne appliances in alveolar transport distraction. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Book Part Analysing the relationship between oil prices and basic petrochemical feedstocks(Springer International Publishing, 2018) Hasanov,E.; Hasanov,M.In this paper we analyse the relationship between crude oil prices and prices of basic petrochemical feedstock. In particular, we estimate dynamic effects of Brent oil prices on naphtha, benzene, ethylene, propylene, acrylonitrile (ACN), vinyl chloride polymer (VCM), purified terephthalic acid (PTA), and monoethylene glycol (MEG). We first analyse cointegration properties among these variables using bounds testing approach. Then we estimate error correction models to assess long- and short-run effects of oil price changes on prices of these petrochemical feedstocks. We find that naphtha prices move one to one with oil prices in the long run. Prices of other feedstock react less than unity in the long run. We also find that only prices of benzene and naphtha react more than unity in the short run whereas prices of propylene and ethylene react less than unity to changes in oil prices. This study fills a major gap in the empirical literature. Although the dynamic interactions among oil prices and fuels as well as other macroeconomic and financial variables have been widely investigated in the literature, the relationships between oil and petrochemicals prices have not been thoroughly analysed. Second, the results of this study have clear policy implications. In particular, we find that prices of basic petrochemicals do not move one to one with oil prices. This finding implies that oil price fluctuations are not fully transmitted to prices of industrial products, and hence oil price changes will have only limited effects on economy. Furthermore, this result also implies that oil companies and oil exporting countries may use petrochemical goods as hedging instruments against oil price falls. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.Book Part Analytic network process with neutrosophic sets(Springer Verlag, 2019) Otay,İ.; Kahraman,C.Analytic network Process (ANP) can model the inner and outer dependencies and feedbacks between the decision-making elements in a network. It calculates the correct weights of criteria, and local and global priorities of alternatives in the presence of dependencies and feedbacks. Classical ANP is a multicriteria decision making method under certainty. However, it can be used under neutrosophic uncertainty. This chapter develops a neutrosophic fuzzy ANP method and illustrates its usage and validity through the solution of a supplier selection problem in a firm manufacturing automobile spare parts. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.Book Part Book Part Artificial Neural Networks; Definition, Properties and Misuses(Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2011) Guresen, E.; Kayakutlu, G.There are no such clear and good definitions of ANNs in the literature. Many of the definitions refer to the figures instead of well explaining the ANNs. That is why many weighted graphs (as in shortest path problem networks) fit the definition of ANN. This study aims to give a clear definition that will differentiate ANN and graphs (or networks) by referring to biological neural networks. Although there is no input choice limitation or prior assumption in ANN, sometimes researchers compare ANN achievements with the results of other methods using different input data and make comments on these results. This study also gives examples from literature to misuses, unfair comparisons and evaluates the underlying reasons which will guide researchers. © 2011 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. There are barriers in terms of transportation, financial, telecommunication, and legal infrastructures. Also, a lack of a qualified workforce, cultural barriers, and security problems hinder the development of e-procurement activities. These are not such significant problems in the developed countries. In this study, we examined the Turkish practice. We gave country background information including macroeconomic data and Internet penetration data, and we gave a picture of the current situation of Turkey. We then discussed how these barriers can be overcome in Turkey. Finally, we gave predictions about how m-procurement may alter the situation and its potential for the Turkish market. © 2007, Idea Group Inc.Book Part Becoming Smart, Innovative, and Socially Responsible in Supply Chain Collaboration(Igi Global, 2018) Akyuz, Goknur Arzu; Gursoy, Guner[No Abstract Available]Book Part Bioactive component analysis(Elsevier, 2020) Kamiloglu,S.; Tomas,M.; Ozdal,T.; Yolci-Omeroglu,P.; Capanoglu,E.Bioactive compounds including polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, organic acids, nucleosides and nucleotides, and phytosterols have attracted great attention due to their role in prevention of several chronic diseases. Accordingly, the methods that are used to analyze these compounds are of interest. Many attempts have been made to provide sensitive and selective analytical methods for the determination and characterization of the bioactive compounds. In this chapter, spectrophotometric, fluorometric, chromatographic, enzymatic, and electrophoretic methods that are used to analyze bioactive compounds among others are presented along with the required pretreatments. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the existing analysis methods are highlighted. © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Traditional functional foods that contain essential nutrients, probiotic microorganisms, and several bioactive compounds can modulate metabolic processes and promote health. Epidemiological studies and randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that the consumption of functional foods has numerous health benefits such as reduction of cancer risk, menopause symptoms, blood pressure, and osteoporosis; enhancement of immune function; and improvement of cardiac and gastrointestinal health, antiinflammatory effects, and antibacterial and antiviral activities. However, people are often hesitant to try unfamiliar foods, even when they believe that they have important health properties. This review aims at indicating existing knowledge about the characteristics and advantages of some traditional functional foods and beverages as a potential functional product for modulating inflammation and oxidative stress, and their benefits on human health with their bioactive compounds. The question is how traditional diet such as Mediterranean and Japanese, including high intake of fruits and vegetables, fish and seafood, fermented foods, fiber, less processed cereals, and only balanced dairy and lean meats, has effects against inflammation and oxidative stress. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. This study is based on the Turkish case. Turkey lies at the crossroads of civilizations, making it hard to define a generally accepted set of ethical principles. Western, Islamic, and Turkish cultures are in competition with each of them, and a synthesis has not yet been achieved. Therefore, a common identity and common ethical standards cannot be acquired. In fact, such a synthesis could be categorized as a new civilization. This disagreement causes proliferation of unethical behaviors such as the illegal copying of software. The majority of highly educated technical people in Turkey approves of the illegal copying of software, if it is necessitated by the interests of the country. This shows that we have a long way to go to reach global ethical standards, and country-specific differences cannot be eliminated in the short term. © 2007, Idea Group Inc.Book Part Business networks and public procurement in Turkey(IGI Global, 2014) Bircan,T.; Çeviker-Gürakar,E.In this chapter, we quantitatively analyze the role of network membership in the performance of firms within the public procurement market in Turkey. We use a unique public procurement dataset of all high-value public procurement contracts-those with a contract value worth over TL 1,000,000-awarded between 2005 and 2010. We consider two types of networks: (1) Internet-based procurement-specific networks and (2) business networks established through business associations. Internet-based procurement-specific business networks provide their members with a wide range of procurement related services, access to critical resources, and timely information. Business associations help member firms establish a strong and unified presence, effectively protect their shared interests, and thus collectively influence governmental economic policies. The findings suggest that both types of network memberships are effective in winning public procurement contracts. There is also an overlap among network memberships, with 8.4% of contracts awarded to the firms that have membership in both networks. © 2015, IGI Global.Book Part Capital: the Book of Communism(Palgrave Macmillan, 2024) Savran, SungurBook Part Cardio-Oncology: Cancer and Treatment-Related Cardiotoxicity and Imaging Methods for Assessment of Cardiotoxicity(Springer Nature, 2024) Guvenc, R.C.; Guler, E.C.; Güvenc, T.S.Cardio-oncology is a new branch of cardiology that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer-related and treatment-related cardiac disorders in patients with malignant disease. Being a highly aggressive form of malignancy, esophageal cancer is known to locally invade nearby cardiac structures and great veins, as well as metastasize to the pericardium and myocardium. The chemoradiotherapy regimens used to treat this aggressive form of cancer also expose patients to the risk of treatment-induced cardiac damage and dysfunction. Imaging modalities for the diagnosis and follow-up of cardiac dysfunction range from simple transthoracic echocardiography to advanced imaging modalities such as speckle-tracking echocardiography to cardiac MRI. This chapter summarizes available evidence on the diagnosis and management of cardiotoxicity related to esophageal cancer and its various treatments, as well as imaging modalities used to monitor cancer- and treatment-related cardiac dysfunction. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.Book Part Central nervous system parasites(Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2024) Aydinli, A.When parasitic infections of the Central Nervous System (CNS) are examined, we encounter quite a lot of parasites. Among protozoans, especially free-living amoebae (such as Naegleria, Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia, and Sappinia) have attracted attention in recent years. In addition to these, Microsporidia (Encephalitozoon), Hartmanella, Malaria, Toxoplasma, etc. will appear. It is important that different parasites are identified using different laboratory methods and their treatments are also different. © 2024 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. There are various factors that cause income inequality, and meanwhile additional factors are occurring. Climate change is one of the emerging factors that has a nonignorable impact on income inequality between countries and also within countries. Climate change makes income inequality deeper for the more vulnerable countries. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between climate change and income inequality. It examines the relationship for Turkey. It uses the Gini coefficient as the indicator of income inequality, and CO2 emissions represents the climate change. It utilizes descriptive analysis to illustrate the relation. It is emphasized that the climate change effects will increase the income inequality in Turkey. If the policymakers do not adopt policies related to combating climate change, the income inequality gets higher depending on this factor. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2021.
