Abstract
This research was aimed to determine the self-care ability and life satisfaction levels of the bedridden individuals' caregivers and to demonstrate the effect of both conditions on each other. Descriptive and cross-sectional study's sample was conducted to 159 relatives of bedridden patients in Gaziosmanpaşa Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Education Research Hospital (Gaziosmanpaşa Fizik Tedavi ve Rehabilitasyon Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi) in the Physical Therapy Service between March and July 2019. Data were obtained by socio-demographic information form, the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), and Self-Care Agency Scale. Mann Whitney U and Chi-Square test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman test and linear regression analysis were used in the assessment of the data. Average age of the caregivers was 45.04 ± 17.31, 56% of them were women. It was determined that 76.1% of caregivers did not have anyone else to take care of their patients, 62.9% did not get any support from their family members, and 50.9% did not want someone else to take care of their patients even if they have the enough resources to do so. 57.8% of the participants stated that they got training on care, 66.7% felt sufficient about care, and 25.8% had thoughts to receive psychological support. It was determined that family relationships all of the caregivers were affected and they could not spend time for themselves. Self-Care Agency Scale score avarege of the participants was 106.07±18.27, and the Satisfaction With Life Scale score average was 12,20±2,85. There was a statistically significant moderate positive correlation was found between Self-Care Agency Scale and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (p <0.001, r = 0.475). As a result of the linear regression analysis, it was found that age group and educational status were significant predictor (p <0.001) of Self-Care Agency Scale ( 26.6% of the total variance ) and the Satisfaction With Life Scale score ( 65.8% of the variance ). It is recommended that nurses who provide care for bedridden individuals should take into account caregivers needs and include them in care processes within the features of family-based care.
