Abstract
In recent years, body dissatisfaction has become an increasingly important issue. In modern society, the influence of media, social norms, and heightened perfectionism is believed to contribute to individuals experiencing greater anxiety about their bodies. A work environment where criticism of one's appearance occurs can create pressure, initiate body dissatisfaction, and distort body image. This, in turn, can lead to changes in eating behaviors and attempts to adhere to strict diets, which may have long-term detrimental effects on health. Body dissatisfaction and the high expectation of being thin can lead individuals to develop a negative attitude towards their own bodies and constantly emphasize their flaws. People may push themselves to conform to an ideal body type accepted by society and struggle with self-acceptance. This can result in low self-esteem, depression, eating disorders, and other health issues. Furthermore, the harmful consequences of body dissatisfaction and the high expectation of being thin can manifest in various areas. The effects on physical health include unhealthy diet habits, excessive exercise, eating disorders, and an increased risk of obesity. Individuals may resort to unhealthy diets or harmful weight-loss methods in an attempt to correct their perceived flaws. This can lead to inadequate nutrient intake, eating disorders, and long-term health problems. Body dissatisfaction also has significant psychological implications. It is often associated with low self-esteem, depression, social anxiety, and personality disorders. When individuals constantly criticize their own bodies and feel inadequate, their overall life satisfaction can be negatively affected. This study aims to determine the nutritional status and physical activity levels of medical professionals, identify their body mass index (BMI), assess their dissatisfaction with their current weight, and explore their expectations regarding thinness and body satisfaction. The study attempts to identify the dietary needs of medical professionals. The research was conducted through a survey consisting of five sections between April 2023 and June 2023. The survey included questions about participants' socio-demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form, the Interpersonal Expectations of Thinness Scale (IOET), the Body Satisfaction Scale, and a 24-hour retrospective food consumption record for two days, one of which was a working day and the other a day off. A total of 348 medical professionals (248 female, 100 male) were included in the study. The study findings revealed that the body mass indexes of medical professionals increased in proportion to their age, indicating higher levels of thinness expectations and lower levels of body satisfaction. Moreover, female medical professionals were observed to have higher levels of thinness expectations and lower levels of body satisfaction compared to their male counterparts. However, no significant relationship was found between physical activity levels and body satisfaction or thinness expectations. It is believed that interventions focusing on workplace health programs and addressing food consumption, physical activity, and body image perception could enhance the overall effectiveness and success of medical professionals in their professional roles. Keywords: Medical representatives, body mass index, expectations of thinness, body satisfaction, physical activity.
