Abstract
Proprioception is an important concept in both prevention and treatment of dance or sports injuries. The presence of good postural control can be considered as a performance indicator, and insufficient postural control is considered a risk factor for injuries. One of the most important elements of performance is the quality of agility; requiring the combination of speed, balance, strength and coordination. Balance analyses are often used as an indicator of injury risk and proprioceptive training programs are applied in many sports to prevent extremities injuries. The aim of this study is to compare the differences between balance, proprioception, joints' range of motion, flexibility, hamstring / quadriceps strength ratios in dancers and footballers. This prospective clinical study was conducted with 20 professional folk dancer volunteers between the ages of 23-34 and 20 professional footballer volunteers between the ages of 24-29. The dancers and footballers' balance and proprioception, hip, knee and ankle joints' range of motion, flexibility, hypermobility and hamstring/quadriceps strength ratios were evaluated. Statistical significance level was taken as p <0.05. Static and dynamic balance of the dancers was found to be significantly better than the footballers (p <0.05). Static balance on double legs, static balance on one leg, static balance with eyes closed and dynamic balance scores were lower in the dancers' than the footballers' (p <0.05). The hip, knee and ankle active range of motion of the dancers was significantly higher than that of the footballers' (p <0.05). The hamstring lengths of the dancers were determined to be significantly higher than the footballers (p <0.05). In this study, no significant difference was found between the dancers and footballers in terms of hamstring / quadriceps strength ratios (p> 0.05). It was concluded that compared to the footballers, the joints' higher range of motion and hamstring flexibility of the dancers contribute positively to their static and dynamic balances. Key Words: Dancer, Footballer, Balance, Proprioception, Flexibility
