Abstract
Cases such as failure in modern medicine approaches or undesired effects of treatment prompted patients and their relatives to try alternative treatment methods. Pharmaceutical usage during pregnancy is a potential risk situation both for mother and fetus. This risk has become the reason why pregnants adopted different alternative methods. In this study, it was aimed to determine CAT methods that the women adopt during their pregnancy periods in which they face with many problems and medication is hazardous, and to identify what are effective in applying those methods and the results of the applied methods. The research was conducted between January-September 2016 at a Family Health Center serving on the European Side of Istanbul using qualitative research method. When collecting data, Personal Information Form and Guide Interview Form were utilized. Interviews were performed as face to face interviews with 20 pregnants on a volunteer basis, and recorded by sound recorder within the permission of participant. The data were evaluated by descriptive analysis method. The required literature survey was made, raw data were organized under codes and themes. After that, all data were interpreted and put into report form. In conclusion, it was determined that the pregnants adopted herbal methods for CAT but did not have sufficient knowledge, that they did not share their CAT use with health personnel and aimed to take training on CAT methods. In terms of right and conscious use of the methods, it is suggested to make more scientific research for CAT use during pregnancy and meet the training requirements of health personnel and patients. Key Words: Pregnancy, complementary and alternative treatment, nurse, midwife.
