Abstract
The aim of current study is to examine the stress and marital adjustment of mothers that have hearing impaired children; in relation with their resiliance, demographic variables and their children's problem behaviors. The sample of the study included 187 mothers who have hearing impaired children aged between 6-12. Data was obtained by Socio Demographic Information Form, Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), Problem Behavior Scale- Mother-Father Form (PBS-MFF), The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), and 'Parent Stress Index (PSI)'. As a result of the statistical evaluation of the data of the study, a significant difference in mothers' stress levels were found depending on their childrens' gender showing that the mothers having a hearing impaired son had higher stress levels than the mothers having a hearing impaired daughter. İn addition to that communication skills of the children and having another kid with special needs made a significant difference on mothers stress levels. In terms of socioeconomic situation, education level, child age, child diagnosis age, child's usage of a hearing device, communication style and hearing loss status no difference was found in mothers' stress levels. A significant negative correlation was found between resilience and mother's stress levels and result showed a negative correlation between mothers' stress levels and dydic adjustment scores. Moreover statistical analysis also yielded a positive correlation between chidren's problem behaviors and mothers' stress levels. The findings of the study were discussed in the light of the current literature on the subject. Keywords: Hearing impairment, mothers stress level, dyadic adjustment, resilience, problem behavior Date: 2017
