Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationship between mindful eating, intuitive eating and orthorexia nervosa in adult individuals. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 270 individuals working in the hospital (165 healthcare workers, 105 administrative staff) between May and August 2023. Data were collected face to face by the researcher. Mindful Eating (MES-30), Intuitive Eating (IES-2) and Orthorexia Nervosa (ORTHO-11) scales were applied to the individuals along with a descriptive information form containing their sociodemographic characteristics and anthropometric measurements. The average age of the participants is 35.27±10.22 years. According to the body mass index distribution of the participants, %4.4 were underweight, %52.2 were normal, %28.1 were overweight, %11.9 were first degree obese, 6 people (%2.2) were second degree obese, and 3 people (%1.1) were severely obese. A very weak positive correlation (r:0,233, p=0,000) was found between the total mean scores of the Orthorexia Nervosa Scale and the Emotional Eating sub-dimension item score of the Mindful Eating Scale; and a very weak negative correlation (r:-0,122, p=0,046) was found between the total mean scores of the Orthorexia Nervosa Scale and the Mindful Eating Scale item score of the Conscious Eating sub-dimension. A very weak positive statistically significant relationship was determined between the total mean scores of the Orthorexia Nervosa Scale and the total item score of the Intuitive Eating Scale (r:0,175, p=0,004). A weak positive statistically significant relationship was determined between the total item score of the Intuitive Eating Scale and the total item score of the Mindful Eating Scale (r:0,480, p=0,000). It was found that as individuals' tendency towards orthorexia increased, intuitive eating decreased and 'emotional eating' from the mindful eating sub-dimensions also decreased, and it was observed in the study that as intuitive eating increased, mindful eating also increased. It is thought that mindful eating may be a solution to prevent emotional eating. By developing intuitive eating behavior in orthorexic individuals, it is possible to better manage the process. In eating disorders such as orthorexia nervosa, it is of great importance to use intuitive eating and mindful eating approaches together, to develop them, and to conduct more comprehensive and extensive studies on this subject.
