Abstract
ABSTRACT INVESTIGATION OF COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT PRACTICES IN CHİLDREN WITH UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTION Complementary and alternative treatment practices are more often preferred than modern medicine because of fear of drug side effects, religious beliefs, socio-cultural structures, lack of sufficient health services and lack of scientific knowledge. its very important to know which kind of alternative that parents use for their children. This study, focus on the complementary and alternative medicine used by parents for children with acute upper respiratory infection. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between 20 May 2017 and 20 December 2017 on parents which their children had treatment of acute upper respiratory infection in Istanbul kagıthane district family health center. Total 236 parents participated and for evaluation, we used a questionnaire developed for this study using the literature. İn this study 95,8% of parents were mothers with an average age of 33,38±6,56 %86 of the parents used alternative treatment and 73,3% of them used alternative medicine because of they didn't get benefit from modern medications and %92,1 of them used alternative medicine before they use the modern medications. Parents use herbal tea 66,9% for a cough and 41,1% for sore throat. there was significant positive correlation between mothers education level and the use of alternative medications (r=0,271) and also significant negative correlation was found with the number of family members and use of alternative medication (r=0,198) and (p<0,01). As the education of the mother increased, the rate of complementary and alternative treatment decreased. As a result; it was determined that the majority of parents had complementary and alternative treatments when the child had upper respiratory tract infections and that the most alternative treatments were used for a cough and sore throat and that the proportion of complementary and alternative treatments decreased with the increase of parents' education.
