Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the quality of the diet of students, in line with suggested daily consumption amount of the nutritional elements, by using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-15). The study was conducted with voluntary students between the ages of 18-25 from the Faculty of Health Sciences, Tuzla Campus, İstanbul Okan University. They were selected through stratified sampling and interviewed face-to-face. The daily food consumption of participants obtained with 'The Form of 24-hours Dietary Recalls'. The anthropometric measurements of participants were also taken. The 80.3% of participants were females (n=204) while 19.7% were males (n=50). The mean age was 20.6±2.3. Among the individuals participating in the study, those with BMI in the normal range were 67.3%, those who were overweight were 14.6%, those who were obese were 3.9%, and underweight individuals were 14.2%. The mean score that participants get from this index was 53.3±10.5 for males and 53.2±10.1 for females. The minimum and maximum points were 26.0 and 79.8 respectively. A significant difference was found among genders in daily intake of energy, whole grain, and dairy. When the diet quality of participants was classified following the Healthy Eating Index, their quality of diet is found to be poor. It is necessary to improve the eating habits of these individuals. New strategies should be developed on ways of gaining behavior about eating habits and diet education should be given to university students and the whole society by experts.
