Abstract
This descriptive study was conducted to determine the effects of adherence to treatment on quality of life in patients with bipolar disorder. The study was completed with 103 bipolar patients who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of bipolar disorder in the psychiatry service of Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital between March and September 2021 and met the inclusion criteria of the study. Patient Information Form, Morisky Treatment Adherence Scale and Quality of Life in Bipolar Disorder Scale were used to obtain the data. In the evaluation of the data, independent groups t test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation and linear regression analysis were used. Morisky Treatment Adherence Scale mean scores of bipolar patients participating in the study were 2.7±1.3, and the mean score of Quality of Life in Bipolar Disorder Scale was found to be 21.8±10.7. A statistically significant weak negative correlation was found between the Morisky Treatment Adherence Scale and the Quality of Life in Bipolar Disorder Scale scores (p<0.001). In conclusion, it was observed that the quality of life of the patients decreased when the treatment non-adherence increased in our study. It is thought that the results of this study will guide the planning of nursing interventions, psychosocial approaches and discharge trainings aimed at increasing the quality of life by determining the factors that cause treatment non-adherence in patients with bipolar disorder and increasing compliance.
