Abstract
The aim of this study to examine the changes in pharyngeal airway dimentions in patients with backward or forward positioning of the mandible treated with orthognatic surgery. Patients were divided into two groups according to positioning of the mandible. Group 1 consisted of 9 patients who underwent maxillary advancement and mandibular setback surgery and Group 2 consisted of 15 patients who underwent maksillar and mandibular advancement surgery, a total of 24 patients were included in the study. The changes in the nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal airway, hyoid bone or head posture relationship were investigated on the lateral cephalometric x-rays taken at the beginning of orthodontic treatment and 6 months after the operation. When the results were evaluated according to the positions of the jaws, a significant difference was observed in the nasopharynx, the position of the hyoid bone and the head posture relationship.
