Abstract
Self-leadership is the ability to manage and lead oneself. According to Furtner et al. (2013), self-leadership empowers leaders to better control their own behavior and exert more influence over their followers. The classification of self-leadership strategies by Anderson and Prussia (1997) served as the basis for this study, and the strategies were further classified into three categories: behavior-focused strategies, natural reward strategies, and constructive thinking strategies. The impact of self-leadership techniques on work stress is examined in this thesis study. In the related literature, it is observed that studies mostly focus on the relationship between stress and self-leadership. There are few studies on self- leadership and work stress. Within the scope of this thesis, banking sector employees, where job stress is experienced intensively, were selected as the sample and data were collected from 250 bank employees of thirteen different banks operating in different states in Nigeria. In this study, it was found that only constructive thinking strategies among self-leadership strategies reduced work stress, while behavior-oriented and natural reward strategies were not effective in reducing work stress. It is important that this research is conducted in the banking sector, where work stress is intense, as it is seen that not all self-leadership strategies are effective in reducing work stress in this sector. Also, this thesis is important in terms of presenting a different finding, unlike the previous researches, to researchers who will work on the concepts of work stress and self-leadership. Key words: Self-Leadership, Work Stress, Self-Leadership Strategies.
