Abstract
Negative childhood experiences can cause individuals to develop negative cognitive structures. These cognitive structures have an effect on the individual's perceptions about himself, others and the world. These structures, which were formed and internalized in early childhood, form the basis for the individual to experience psychological problems in the following years and affect his mental health negatively. In this study, an answer was sought for the question of whether there is a mediating role of early maladaptive schemas in the relationship between negative childhood experiences and general psychological wellbeing. 299 people, whose ages vary between 18 and 50, constitute the research sample. In the study, the negative experiences of the sample group during childhood, early adaptation disruptive schemes in adulthood and their general psychological wellbeing were evaluated. For this purpose, personal information questionnaire, Childhood Mental Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form-3 (YSQ-SF3) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) were used. All hypotheses created within the scope of the research are supported by the findings. As a result of the findings, it was determined that the participants who were exposed to negative childhood experience have problems in terms of general psychological wellbeing. It was found that the participants who had negative childhood experience have more early maladaptive schemas than the other group who did not have negative childhood experience. At the same time, it was determined that the participants who had problems in the scope of general psychological wellbeing could be included more in the field of early maladaptive schemas. Finally, it was observed that the relationship between negative childhood experience and general psychological wellbeing was mediated by early maladaptive schemas. It is evaluated that negative life experiences may lead to the development of early maladaptive schemas, regardless of which subtitle they belong to, and that the resulting schemas may provide a basis for psychological difficulties in the forthcoming years.
