Abstract
In this study, the effect of early maladaptive schemas and perceived parental attitudes on relationship satisfaction were investigated in individuals with romantic relationships. The sample of the study consisted of 225 individuals with a romantic relationship between the ages of 18 and 65 years. This sample was obtained by snowball sampling method. The Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form-3 (YSQ-SF3), Young Parenting Inventory (YPI), Relationship Assesment Scale (RAS) and Demographic Information Form were used to evaluate the variables. The data were analyzed with IBM SPSS 25.0 program. Pearson Correlation Analyse, regression analysis, independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni Post-hoc test were used. As a result of the analyzes, a significant negative difference was found between age variable and relationship satisfaction. Significant differences were not found between the participants' place of residence, relationship status, having children, educational status and level of income with relationship satisfaction. Significant differences were found between relationship durations with relationship satisfaction. Bonferroni Post-hoc test was applied to determine these differences. A significant difference was not found between gender and relationship satisfaction of individuals. At the same time, the gender variable did not reveal any significant differences in the mother dimensions of the Young Parenting Inventory. However, significant differences were found between the father dimensions and gender of the Young Parenting Inventory. According to the findings obtained, the belitting/criticizing, conditional success-oriented, pessimistic and punitive father dimensions men had higher scores than women. According to the analysis of the early maladaptive schemas according to gender, it was concluded that men are more dominant than women because of emotional deprivation, defectiveness/shame, social isolation, emotional inhibition/over-responsibility and high standards schemas. According to the data obtained from this study, the perceived mother attitude predicts the satisfaction of the relationship. There was a significant relationship emotionally inhibited/restricted and emotionally deprived between relationship satisfaction. Emotionally inhibited/restricted mother dimension positively affects relationship satisfaction, while the emotionally deprived mother dimension negatively affects relationship satisfaction. Regression analysis revealed that the perceived father's attitude predicted the satisfaction of the relationship. According to these results, the attitudes of the belitting/criticizing father dimension negatively affect the satisfaction of the relationship. As a result of the analyzes conducted that early maladaptive schemas affect the relationship satisfaction and significant differences were found in emotional deprivation and dependence/inability schema dimensions. Emotional deprivation and dependence/inability schema dimensions negatively affect relationship satisfaction. Keywords: early maladaptive schemas, perceived parent attitudes, relationship satisfaction Date: İstanbul – 2019
