Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of perceived parental style on attachment styles, self-esteem and self-compassion in adults. 400 individuals between the ages of 18-60 participated in the study. Informed Consent Form, Socio-demographic Information Form, Parenting Styles Questionnaire, Experiences in Close Relationships- Revise (ECR-R), Self-Compassion Scale and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were given to participants. In the study, perceived parental style was measured separately for mother and father. Perceived parental style was evaluated in two dimensions as acceptance/involvement and control/supervision. Attachment styles were evaluated as anxious and avoidant in two dimensions. According to the results of the regression analysis, only the acceptance/involvement dimension of the perceived parenting style of the father affects the avoidant attachment style significantly and negatively. The acceptance/involvement dimension of the perceived parenting style of the father affects the anxious attachment style significantly and negatively, and the acceptance/involvement dimension of the perceived parenting style of the mother affects the anxious attachment style significantly and positively. According to the results of the regression analysis conducted to determine the extent to which perceived parenting style of mother and father affect self-compassion, the acceptance/involvement dimension of the perceived parenting style of the father affects the self-compassion in a significant and positive way and the control/supervision dimension of the father affects the self-compassion in a significant and negative way. It is seen that the self-esteem only perceived parenting style of the father has a significant and positive effect with the acceptance/involvement dimension.
