Abstract
COMPARISON OF THE NURSING IMAGE PERCEPTIONS OF THE PARENTS OF THE NEWBORNS IN THE NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT DURING THE ADMISSION AND DISCHARGE PROCESSES The aim of this study was to compare nursing perceptions of parents of infants who were hospitalized in neonatal intensive care unit, during admission and discharging. The universe of the descriptive study was consisted of the parents whose children were cared in a neonatal intensive care unit of a private hospital in Istanbul, between 1 January and 31 March 2019. It was planned to reach out all parents however only 53 (%55) parents were included to the sample, because of deaths and not existing of parent/parents during admission and/or discharge period. Ethical and institutional approvals were got before collecting data. Data were obtained by a survey that consisted of a questionnaire and the Nursing Image Scale. Kolmogorov- Smirnov Test, Paired Sample Test and Mann Whitney U Test were used for data analyzing. It was determined that 67.9% of the parents who participated in the study were women, 71.7% did not have any experience of hospitalization, 52.8% were primary, secondary or high school graduates and 67.9% were not working. The mean score of the Nursing Image Scale for Nursing Profession applied during hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit was 153.96 ± 8.68 during the first application. In the second application in the neonatal intensive care unit, the mean score of the Nursing Image Scale for Nursing Profession applied at discharge was found to be 155.26 ± 9.04. It was determined that there was no significant difference between the admission and discharge scores of the parents during admission and discharge (p> 0.05). According to the socio-demographic characteristics of the parents, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference between the subscale of gender (p <0.05) and the total score of the nursing image scale (p <0.01) according to the level of education. It was determined that both the gender image and the general nursing image of those who have university or higher education are high. There were no statistically significant differences between parents scores according to the other variables (p> 0.05). When the sub-dimensions of the scale were examined, it was found that the nursing images of the working parents and the parents with a history of hospitalization were more positive. Key words: Neonatal intensive care unit, Nursing, Nursing image perception, Parent.
