Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to analyze the relationship between attachment styles and defense mechanisms used in university students. The research was carried out with the participation of a total of 419 university students living in Istanbul, 186 males and 233 females who have or have not had a romantic relationship before. All participants were applied Socio-demographic Data Form, Experiences in Close Relationships (Revised) Inventory and Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ). Descriptive statistics were used such as frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum and also Kolmogorov-Smirnov Normality test, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA analysis, Pearson correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were used to analyze the data. According to the analysis conducted to examine the relationship between attachment styles and defense mechanisms, it was found that defense mechanisms used by the participants with lower mean scores of anxiety and avoidance on attachment were more mature; defense mechanisms used by the participants who were anxious on attachment were more neurotic and immature, and defense mechanisms used by the participants who were avoidant on attachment were more immature.
