Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the relationship between smartphone addiction status and loneliness level of nurses working in a public hospital. The universe of this descriptive and cross-sectional study consisted of 320 nurses working in Tekirdağ State Hospital between April-September 2019. In the sample selection, the sample calculation formula was used when the universe was determined and this study was carried out with 220 nurses who stated that they were using smart phones. Descriptive data collection form, UCLA Loneliness Scale and Smart Phone Addiction Scale-Short Form (SPAS-SF) were used to collect research data. In the evaluation of the data, number-percentage calculations, Mann Whitney U test, chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman test were used. 51.4% of the nurses participating in the study stated that they sometimes make easy friendships, and 59.5% sometimes feel lonely; 97.3% stated that they were members of the social networking site, 58.2% stated that they used smartphones for 6-10 years, 81.4% stated that they used smartphones in every situation, happy or unhappy. The mean UCLA-LS score of the nurses was 36.01 ± 7.75 and the SPAS-SF score mean was 26 ± 7.76. Nurses' SPAS-SF score mean has a statistically significant relationship with that education status, having children, years of work in the profession, easy friendship, social networking site membership, daily smartphone time and number of controls, charging the phone multiple times, and seeing itself as a smartphone addict (p<0.05). UCLA-LS score showing loneliness of the nurses participating in the study as a statistically significant relationship with that not easy friendship, feeling lonely, lack of people who can share problems, having psychological problems recently, membership of social networking site, using the smartphone when unhappy, and seeing itself as a smartphone addict (p<0.05). A statistically significant, moderate, positive correlation was found between the nurses' SPAS-SF and UCLA-LS mean scores (p<0.05). Keywords: Loneliness, Smartphone addiction, Nurse.
