Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the use of complementary and alternative treatments in the management of symptoms in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The research was completed with 296 patients hospitalized in the Neurology clinic at Kocaeli University Research and Application Hospital between July 2022 and May 2023, who met the research criteria and agreed to participate in the research. Research data were collected with a Survey Form consisting of three parts: demographic characteristics created by the researcher, diagnoses regarding Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Diagnoses Regarding the Use of Complementary and Alternative Treatment (CAM) Methods. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. It was determined that 22.0% of the MS patients participating in the study used complementary and alternative treatment methods and 13.5% used oral herbs. It was determined that 65.5% of the complaints that bothered MS patients the most were weakness in the extremities, 63.9% were fatigue, and 61.5% were muscle spasm. In the study, it was determined that people experiencing symptoms of muscle spasm, fatigue, pain, urinary control problems, weakness in the extremities, dysarthria, insomnia and dizziness tended to prefer complementary and alternative treatments (p = 0.000). It was determined that some of the multiple sclerosis patients used complementary and alternative treatment methods to manage their symptoms. A detailed anamnesis should be taken regarding the CAM methods used by MS patients to manage their symptoms, and training and consultancy about CAM methods should be provided to both patients and healthcare personnel. Keywords: Multiple sclerosis, complementary and alternative treatment, symptom management.
