Abstract
The study was carried out to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercise on anxiety with bipolar and depressive patients before the electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). A quasi-experimental design study's data was collected with the 30 bipolar and depression in-patients who received the ECT treatment first time in the hospital, between the date 29 May 2020 and 29 October 2020. The data collected with information form, STAXI State anxiety scale, and Anxiety visual analogue scale (VAS).. The data analyzed descriptive statistic, t-test, and the Friedman test. In the research, it was found that the VAS anxiety level was the statistically lower cause of the progressive muscle relaxation exercises (p<0.05), on the other hand, the state anxiety level was not affected by progressive muscle relaxation exercise statistically (p>0.05). It also not effected the next ECT treatment - anxiety level (p>0.05). The meaning changes were found in pulse and breathing, as a vital sign (p>0.05). Although the short term effect was found on Anxiety-VAS before the ECT treatment in order to progressive muscle relaxation exercises, the progressive exercise was not an effective method in the long term process.
