Abstract
It would be possible for Syrian migrant students to be equipped with 21st century skills by exercising the right to education, which is one of the most important human rights, and take responsibilities in their new life in Turkey if administrators and teachers educate migrant students the best way. Based on this context, the aim of the study is to determine the problems faced by Syrian immigrant students in schools according to the opinions of school administrators and teachers who have Syrian immigrant students in their schools, and to determine the practices of school administrators and teachers related to solving these problems. The phenomenology design, which is one of the qualitative research approaches, was employed in this study. The study group of the research consists of 60 people consisting of 20 administrators and 40 teachers, who were formed according to easily accessible case sampling, one of the purposive sampling methods. Participants work in kindergarten, primary, secondary and high school level schools in Avcilar, Bahçelievler, Bahçeşehir, Esenyurt and Zeytinburnu districts of Istanbul, where Syrian students are concentrated. Six questions were used as the research's data collection tool to determine the demographic characteristics of the study group, and an interview form with two semi-structured open-ended questions was used to determine the problems faced by Syrian migrant students studying at the schools where they work, as well as their perspectives on how to solve these problems. The study's goals guided the selection of topics and sub-themes. According to the data obtained in the light of the results of the study Syrian migrant students; administrators came up with six themes of issues which are socio-cultural based, language based, family based, institution based, psychological and structural conditions of schools; and teachers added a seventh theme which is COVID-19 based. The practices of administrators and teachers to solve these problems faced by students were determined as the teaching of Turkish, which is the official language of education, the inclusion of family in education in language learning, and the strengthening of school culture, physical and social structure. Because the study's findings are based on the participants' experiences and inferences, it is anticipated that the applications that provide solutions will serve as a guiding guide for the educational actors, administrators and teachers, and will add to the relevant literature. It is determined in the form of strengthening its physical and social structure.
