Abstract
This research aims to measure the relationship of perceived helicopter parental attitude to depression and anxiety in adolescents. Parents who are described as helicopter parents have very characteristic features. One of them is that, their children's lives are over-intervened in all areas, such as; education, work and marriage. They don't let their children to solve the problems they face on their own. Especially, since they are focused on academic achievement, they do not leave their children to make choices and have preferences over their educational lives. Accordingly, the research carried out in order to determine the outcome of the helicopter parental attitudes and behaviors perceived by adolescents who were consisting of 123 (73 female and 50 male) participants, between the ages 15-18. The sample of the study consisted of high school students (only 10. and 11. classes) who are living in Çorlu district. Data were gathered using self-report scales. The results of the research findings did not detect a significant outcome between the perceived helicopter parental attitude and depression and anxiety. When evaluated over gender, it was found that the level of depression and anxiety in women was higher than in men. Adolescents living with their parents were found to have lower levels of depression and anxiety from adolescent individuals whose parents lived separately. Private Anatolian High School students were found to perceive more helicopter parental attitudes. In addition, the educational status of the parents does not have any effect, among the findings. Given that the number of studies carried out with helicopter parental attitude is quite small, this study is aimed at providing new space for researchers. Keywords: Helicopter parent, depression, anxiety, adolescence, attitude and behavior
