Abstract
To provide better quality care through the establishment of therapeutic relationships with their patients, it is important for nurses to have an advanced level of emotional intelligence. Nurses with higher emotional intelligence will be happy individuals who can easily reach the care behaviors they are aiming for and thus they will be able to meet the physiological and emotional needs of their patients. This study was conducted as a descriptive study to examine the effect of nurses' emotional intelligence levels on their care behaviors. In order to obtain a balanced participation, the target population of the study was formed of 172 nurses selected using the stratified sampling method from among 311 nurses working at the Kocaeli University Research and Practise Hospital between 10/01/2016 - 15/04/2016. The data of the study was collected using the Personal Identifcation Information Form, Caring Behaviors Scale – 24, and Reviewed Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale. The collected data was evaluated using frequency analysis, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the Shapiro-Wilk test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis and Tukey's tests. Participants who read any publication about emotional intelligence was found to be 52.3%. 52.9% of the nurses could maintain high motiviation while providing care, 82.6% could empathize, and 65.7% self- evaluated their care as succesful. The mean of the maintenance behaviors scale was calculated as 5.17 and the mean of the emotional intelligence scale was calculated as 146.3. A positive correlation was found between the emotional intelligence scale and care behaviors scale (p <0.05). In line with these results; programs to raise awareness and support the development of nurses' emotional intelligence levels in order to improve quality of care could be included in the scope of in-service trainings and post-graduate programs. Keywords: Emotional intelligence in nursing, Health care
