Abstract
Aim: The rapid spread of the Covid-19 disease, its high death rate, lack of effective treatment and lack of information have led to an increase in the sense of uncertainty and fear of death in people. The aim of this study is to evaluate the levels of intolerance to uncertainty and death anxiety in patients hospitalized in isolation wards with the diagnosis of Covid-19 and to determine the relationship between these variables. Method: This research was carried out in descriptive-relationship-seeking design. Research data were collected in a hospital for the Ministry of Health in Istanbul between July and August 2021. The sample of the study consisted of 120 patients hospitalized in isolation wards with the diagnosis of Covid-19. Research data; The semi-structured interview form regarding the Sociodemographic and Covid-19 process of the patients were collected with the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale and Thorson Powell Death Anxiety Scale. Descriptive analysis, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis test and Spearman correlation analysis methods were used in the evaluation of the data obtained from the research. Findings: In this study, it was determined that the total mean of Death Anxiety of the participants was 69.97±15.03, and the total mean of Intolerance of Uncertainty was 41.95±7.19. A positive and significant relationship was found between the level of intolerance to uncertainty and death anxiety in patients with a diagnosis of Covid-19. However, it was determined that the level of intolerance to uncertainty differed according to the marital status, education level and daily sleep time of the participants. In addition, death anxiety levels were found to differ according to smoking. Conclusion: Intolerance to uncertainty and death anxiety scores in patients with a diagnosis of Covid-19 are above the medium level; As the level of intolerance of uncertainty increases, death anxiety also increases. In this direction; It is recommended that patients hospitalized due to Covid-19 be evaluated in terms of death anxiety, informed with more frequent and up-to-date information about the disease and treatment process, and health personnel working in Covid-19 units are informed about the fear of death that patients may experience and how to evaluate it.
