Abstract
The present study was carried out as a narratives qualitative study in order to determine the difficulties experienced in providing and maintaining care by midwives and nurses who care for refugee pregnant and puerperal women. The study population included 25 midwives and nurses working in the delivery room, pregnancy emergency room, obstetrics and gynecology clinics of Suleymaniye Maternity Hospital. Since the pregnant women who did not want to participate in the study and who did not give adequate responses were excluded from the sample, the study was completed with 10 nurses and midwives. A personal information form and interview form were administered to nurses and midwives. The data were collected with face-to-face interview technique by recording voice between February and March 2017. The data were analyzed, the themes and upper themes were created and they were interpreted by searching the literature according to the results of the research. The research revealed that the nurses and midwives used their body language to a great extent while providing and maintaining care for refugee pregnant and puerperal women, that misunderstandings were experienced, that they felt exhausted while giving care and they stated that it was not different from caring for the pregnant and puerperal who spoke the same language with them. The nurses and midwives reported that providing care for refugee patients increased the workload and that there was no specific arrangement about providing and maintaining care for this group of patients in their institutions. The nurses and midwives indicated that having an institution translator for 24 hours and founding a hospital for only refugee patients would be effective in eliminating the problems experienced. According to the study results, more comprehensive studies should be conducted on the difficulties experienced by midwives and nurses caring for refugee patients. The difficulties experienced in providing and maintaining care by midwives and nurses who care for refugee pregnant and puerperal women should be defined not only for nurses and midwives but also for refugee pregnant and puerperal women. Key words: Refugee pregnant, Puerperal women, Migration midwives, migration and nurses.
