Abstract
The aim of the present thesis is to analyze translation policies on indirect translation through the translation journals published between 1979 and 2013 in Turkey within the framework of Gideon Toury's concept of 'translation norms' (Toury 1995:53). Taking indirect translations as a case with a special reference to Albert Branchadell's concept of 'less translated languages' (Branchadell 2004: 1), the study also addresses languages or cultures dominant in the Turkish system of translation between 1979 and 2013. The present thesis is the first study analyzing translational norms on indirect translation in Turkish in a specific period. In the study, I first compiled direct and indirect translations into Turkish in the translation journals, then I analysed the data by centering not only on mediating languages but also on source systems and text types, etc. In order to reach consistent results, the journals are examined within three groups: 1979-1989, 1990-1999, and 2000-2013. Each of these periods are also discussed under the following titles: the relationship between source system and directness of translation, the relationship between text types and directness of translation, and the relationship between the preferred mediating language and source systems/text types. The study shows (1) that source language of a translation is concealed during specific periods in which, hence, indirect translations are presented as direct translations, (2) that the dominant language/culture in a specific translation system is influential on selecting mediating language/s, and (3) that linguistic incapability is not the only motivation behind the phenomenon. Key words: indirect translation, translation norms, translation policies, less translated languages
