Abstract
The electric vehicle (EV) has come to be widely used in recent years and consequently the battery thermal management (BTM) of the EV's has gained attention of researchers. If the HVAC and BTM systems of the electric vehicles can be improved, the battery life period and the state of charge rate can be increased. This study aims to increase performance of the BTM. By this target, in order to improve the range of the HEV (hybrid electric vehicle), a heat pump system is suggested not only for HVAC system but also for BTM by using the waste heat in HEV. In this study, in order to improve the performance of BTM system of HEV, an adsorption heat pump assisted system is suggested. The thermodynamic analysis of a hybrid cycle involving mechanical pump, internal combustion engine (ICE), and adsorption refrigeration system is performed. The mechanical refrigeration system and the waste heat of ICE are coupled to an adsorption refrigeration system via condenser. The released heat from the condensers (radiators) is used in the isobaric desorption process of adsorption refrigeration system. The change of individual and total COP of the hybrid refrigeration systems with condenser, desorption and evaporation temperatures are investigated and results showed that, the combination of the two cycles can improve COP of vapor compression cycle used for battery pack cooling from 14 to 20% depending ambient temperature. © 2017 Begell House Inc..
