Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of maladaptive perfectionism on emotional eating among individuals aged 18 to 65 and to evaluate the mediating role of intolerance of uncertainty and perceived stress in this relationship, considering the moderating effects of related factors. In this context, both direct and indirect relationships between the variables were analyzed, and differences based on sociodemographic factors were also investigated. A moderated mediation model was employed to analyze how intolerance of uncertainty and perceived stress mediate the relationship between emotional eating and maladaptive perfectionism, while also considering potential moderating influences. A relational survey design based on self-report questionnaires was utilized, and participants were recruited using a convenience sampling method. The study sample consisted of 447 individuals, of whom 256 (57.3%) were female and 191 (42.7%) were male. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Information Form, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, and Emotional Eating Scale. These instruments were used to measure variations in the participants' self-reported responses and to obtain meaningful results. Data collection was conducted in November and December 2024 through online surveys and printed questionnaires. In the data analysis process, independent samples t-test was used to examine differences between two groups, while one-way ANOVA was applied for variables with multiple categories. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between dependent and independent variables, while mediation and moderated mediation effects were analyzed using Process Macro. All analyses were performed using SPSS software. The findings revealed significant positive relationships among perfectionism, perceived stress, intolerance of uncertainty, and emotional eating. Furthermore, it was determined that stress and uncertainty-related anxiety mediate the relationship between perfectionism and emotional eating, with moderation effects influencing these mediation pathways. Maladaptive perfectionism was found to have both direct and total effects on emotional eating. Additionally, the results of the moderated mediation model indicated that intolerance of uncertainty varies depending on its anxiety dimension and perceived stress levels. The findings were discussed in light of the existing literature, and suggestions for future research were provided.
