Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between social anxiety and maladaptive daydreaming, and the moderating role of perceived social support in this mediating relationship. In this study, predictive correlational model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. Convenience sampling method was applied to create the sample of the study. A total of 384 people, 279 female and 105 male participated in the study. The Sociodemographic İnformation Form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Maladaptive Daydreaming Scale, Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, and Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale were used in the study. Data were collected online between May and October 2024. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 27 program and the program's Process Macro add-on. Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to examine the relationship between the research variables, and regression analysis including the Bootstrap technique was used to examine the moderational mediating role. As a result of the analyses, positive significant correlations were found between social anxiety and low self-esteem; social anxiety and maladaptive daydreaming; low self-esteem and maladaptive daydreaming. While perceived social support had negative significant correlation with low self-esteem, the relationship between perceived social support and maladaptive daydreaming was insignificant. In addition, it was found that perceived social support did not have a moderating role in the effect of social anxiety on maladaptive daydreaming through self-esteem. The findings of this study were evaluated by comparing them with the results of relevant studies in the literature, and recommendations were made to researchers and clinicians.
