Abstract
This research aims to examine design preferences in middle-class residences in Jordan and the effects of these preferences on the psychological states of the residents. The study examines the reasons behind Jordanians' residential interior preferences with determined criteria. For the research, examination criteria were determined under four main headings and the thesis was structured within the framework of these criteria. The defined headings are psychological factors, physical preferences, social preferences and economic factors. In the thesis study, the survey prepared by following these four headings and creating sub-criteria was given to the homeowners and their answers were analyzed with statistical models. The residences were selected from the capital Amman. The area of the selected residences is approximately between 100 square meters and 250 square meters, which is common in Jordan for middle-income families ranging from 3-7 people. Some of the houses selected for the research are one-floor, others are flats in two-floors houses. The size of the houses and the number of rooms are almost the same, the difference is only in the number of floors. The number of houses examined and visited is between (15 -20). The surveys were evaluated statistically using the four determined headings and subheadings, and the findings were interpreted in terms of interior space preferences. The research examined the design of house interiors such as living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and balconies, and focused on design factors: residents' reactions, emotions, memories, place attachment and interests. The reasons that increase residents' comfort in their houses and their sense of belonging to their spaces have been analyzed. Additionally, the reasons behind the furniture, materials, colors, accessories and other preferences of Jordanians in their residences were examined. By analyzing the survey results, the interior design preferences of the Jordanian middle-class family were determined within the framework of the selected criteria. The results of the research; It has shown the importance of working with an interior designer who can examine the needs of the family and apply appropriate solutions for the living spaces.
