Abstract
This study examined the relationships between women's attitudes toward seeking psychological help and self-compassion and social/social stigma. The study sample consisted of 390 female participants living in province of Istanbul, aged between 18-60 who participated voluntarily via Internet. To collect data in the context of research, The Socio-Demographic Form, The Attitudes Towards Seeking Psychological Help Scale of Short Form, The Self Compassion Scale and The Scale for Social Stigma due to Psychological Help were used. A significant positive correlation was found between women's self-compassion and their attitude towards seeking psychological help. Additionally, significant negative relationships were found between women's attitudes toward seeking psychological help and subcomponents of self-compassion variables such as self-judgment, isolation, over-identification, and self-compassion. A significant negative association was found between women's perception of social/social stigma and their attitude towards seeking psychological help. A negative and significant correlation was found between women's perception of social/social stigma and the self-compassion variable. The relationships between the sub-dimensions of the self-compassion scale and the perception of social stigma were also examined. It was concluded that there are positive and significant correlations between isolation, over-identification and self-judgment, which are sub-dimensions of the scale of self-compassion, and the perception of social stigma. It was observed that the perception of social stigma was a mediating variable in the relationship between self-compassion and attitudes towards seeking psychological help. As a result of the study, its clearly observed that the attitudes of the participants to receiving psychological help differed significantly depending on their age, marital status, employment status, whether they had ever received psychological help for themselves, the degree of the help they received and the condition of having a friend who received psychological help. It was found that attitudes towards seeking psychological help showed no significant differences with respect to the occupational group that sought psychological help.
