Article 5th and 6th grade students' perceptions of communication(Pegem Akad Yayincilik Egitim Danismanlik Hizmetleri Tic Ltd Sti, 2020) Sarkin, Dondu Bahar Sahin; Duran, AyseminThis study aims to examine how 5th and 6th grade students perceive the phenomenon of communication. It was designed as a qualitative research and the phenomenological method was used. Totally, 80 students constituted the study group. A two-part "Communication Perception Form" was created by the researchers in order to determine the perceptions of the students regarding the phenomenon of communication. Content analysis technique was used in evaluating the data obtained in this study. Data on the phenomenon of communication were gathered among five categories (nature, emotion, food, existence, tool/mediator). In the visual metaphors of the students, it was seen that they drew telephone and talking people mostly. The metaphors developed by the 5th and 6th graders, which are the first levels of secondary school, can be considered as important indicators for understanding the positive and negative effects of communication on students. In this study, where communication generally evokes speech or correspondence, it can be suggested that students acquire this skill in various fields through programs, since it is seen that students make more in-depth descriptions in visual expression.Article Aberrant socs3 promoter methylation as a noninvasive diagnostic biomarker for locally advanced prostate cancer;(Logos Medical Publishing, 2020) Demircan Tan,B.; Turan,T.; Yucel,B.; Altundag Kara,S.; Salman Yilmaz,S.; Yildirim,A.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the promoter methylation status of Rasassociated domain family 1A (RASSF1A), O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), Phosphatase with tensin homology (PTEN) and Suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) tumor suppressor genes and evaluate the clinical utility of these genes as noninvasive, bloodbased epigenetic biomarkers for the diagnosis of Prostate Cancer (PCa). Method: A total of 41 consecutive patients and 10 healthy control groups were enrolled in the study. Pyrosequencing was performed to analyze the methylation levels of the promoter regions of the four tumor suppressor genes in patients compared to healthy controls. Results: The promoter methylation levels of RASSF1A, MGMT, PTEN and SOCS3 did not differ between the patient and control groups. However, SOCS3 promoter methylation level was significantly higher for patients having locally advanced PCa compared to those having localized PCa (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our results indicated that SOCS3 could be a useful, noninvasive blood-based epigenetic biomarker for the diagnosis of locally advanced PCa. © Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine.Article Acil Serviste Hasta Yakınları Öfke Seviyesi ve Düşünce Özellikleri İlişkisi: Pilot Çalışma(2023) Yaşar, Alişan Burak; Gündoğmuş, İbrahim; Taycan, Serap Erdoğan; Özdel, Kadir; Türkçapar, Mehmet Hakan; Usta, DilaraŞiddete yönelik müdahalelerin planlanması için mevcut çalışma acil servis bekleme salonundaki hasta yakınlarının öfke ve şiddete eğilimleri ile bilişsel çarpıtmaları arasındaki olası bağıntıların belirlenmesine odaklanmaktadır. Material and Methods: Between June 2017 and October 2019, 223 intrauterine insemination cycle records were scanned retrospectively in 152 infertile couples diagnosed with ovulatory dysfunction or unexplained infertility. Result: A total of 33 positive pregnancy test results were obtained, which had shown a pregnancy success rate of 14.8%. Pregnancy success rate in Gonadotropin IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) cycles was found as 16.6% and pregnancy success rate in CC (Clomiphene Citrate) IUI cycles was found as 9.3%. While it has been detected that smoking has had a negative effect on IUI success rate for the infertile population with ovulatory dysfunction and unexplained infertility (p=0.012); factors such as female age, BMI (Body mass index), infertility span, basal FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), basal LH (Luteinizing Hormone), basal estradiol levels and trigger-day endometrial thickness were found to have no correlation with IUI success rate at all.Review Acute spinal epidural hematoma: A case report and review of the literature(Turkish Assoc Trauma Emergency Surgery, 2020) Akar, Ezgi; Ogrenci, Ahmet; Koban, Orkun; Yilmaz, Mesut; Dalbayrak, SedatSpinal epidural hematoma (SEH) is a rare but a significant cause of spinal cord compression and neurologic deficits. Its etiology is usually unknown and requires emergency intervention. The present study aims to review the clinical significance, treatment strategies and clinical outcomes of traumatic SEH with a rare case presentation. Our patient was a 42-year-old female who presented with back pain and loss of sensation and strength in the legs. The patient did not have any disease and did not use anticoagulant drugs. The patient developed numbness in her legs half an hour after having a traditional back walking massage due to occasional back pain. She was paraplegic and anesthetic when seen in our clinic. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed posterior epidural hemorrhage at Th3-Th4 levels. In the 12th hour, the hematoma was evacuated by an emergency decompressive hemilaminectomy. At the postoperative 24th hour, the patient had symptomatic improvement, and in the sixth month, the patient was mobilized with support. SEH is a rare condition that should be considered in patients with sudden onset of back pain and extremity weakness. Although the gold standard diagnostic tool is MRI, CT is often sufficient to avoid delayed surgery. Immediate surgical decompression (laminectomy/hemilaminectomy) should be performed in cases diagnosed with SEH with neurological deficits.Article Adaptation of COVID-19 risk perception and COVID-19 prevention guidelines compliance scales to Turkish: a validity and reliability study(2021) Nazlı Kaya; Özlem Karatana; Emre İşçiAim: The aim of this study is to make Turkish adaptation and psychometric analysis of the COVID-19 Risk Perception and COVID-19 Prevention Guideline Compliance scales. The aim of this study was to assess adherence to guideline-directed medical and device therapy for the treatment of patients with chronic HFrEF (left ventricular ejection fraction <= 40%). Methods: The Adherence to guideline-directed medical and device Therapy in outpAtients with HFrEF (ATA) study is a prospective, multicenter, observational study conducted in 24 centers from January 2019 to June 2019. Results: The study included 1462 outpatients (male: 70.1%, mean age: 67 +/- 11 years, mean LVEF: 30%+/- 6%) with chronic HFrEF. Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors, beta-blockers, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs), and ivabradin were used in 78.2%, 90.2%, 55.4%, and 12.1% of patients, respectively. The proportion of patients receiving target doses of medical treatments was 24.6% for RAS inhibitors, 9.9% for beta-blockers, and 10.5% for MRAs. Among patients who met the criteria for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), only 16.9% of patients received an ICD (167 of 983) and 34% (95 of 279) of patients underwent CRT (95 of 279). Conclusion: The ATA study shows that most HFrEF outpatients receive RAS inhibitors and beta-blockers but not MRAs or ivabradin when the medical reasons for nonuse, such as drug intolerance or contraindications, are taken into account. In addition, most eligible patients with HFrEF do not receive target doses of pharmacological treatments or guideline-recommended device therapy. Final settlement and End of Primary (EOP) settlement times have been estimated theoretically as well as using the Asaoka graphical procedure. The compliance of settlement-time curves with in-situ measurements and Asaoka solution has been investigated. A geotechnical model was developed for finite element and three-dimensional consolidation analyses. The settlement curves obtained by varying horizontal-vertical permeability coefficient ratio (k(h)/k(v)) and in-situ measurements have been compared, and k(h)/k(v) values corresponding to 90% degree of consolidation has been computed for all sectors. The effect of drain spacing (S-drain) as well as drain length (L-drain) on the rate of consolidation have been evaluated for each sector, keeping the specified ratios constant. The times corresponding to 95% degree of consolidation (t(95)) have been calculated using the theoretical solution and compared to in-situ measurements. Calculated t(95)'s has also been compared to their estimated values by varying the spacing (S-drain) and the length (L-drain). Additionally, the required intervals of S-drain and L-drain have been obtained corresponding to the calculated t(95) times. The analyses suggest that the main reason for prolonged consolidation was the horizontal to vertical permeability coefficient ratio. According to the analysis results, PVD implementation was not efficient in clays having k(h)/k(v) of approximately unity. The main conclusion of this study was to discover the necessity for optimizing the variables in any such project. The efficacy of the works can be significantly enhanced if simultaneous evaluation of the parameters S-drain and L-drain and the permeability ratio k(h)/k(v) is carried out prior to field work. Otherwise, "accidents" may emerge as found out in this project.Article Analysis of complications following posterior vertebral column resection for the treatment of severe angular kyphosis greater than 100(2017) Balioğlu, Mehmet Bülent; Albayrak, Akif; Atıcı, Yunus; Kargın, Deniz; Mert, Muhammed; Kaygusuz, Mehmet AkifObjective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the complications, efŞcacy and safety of posteriorvertebral column resection (PVCR) in severe angular kyphosis (SAK) greater than 100.Methods: The medical records of 17 patients (mean age 17.9 (range, 9e27) years) with SAK who underwent PVCR, were reviewed. However, for these systems to achieve widespread commercial adoption, it's crucial to reduce the costs associated with catalysts used in the core of the system, known as the membrane-electrode assembly. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gained attention as a promising avenue for alternative energy systems, offering a straightforward design and the ability to treat wastewater during energy production, thus sidestepping the use of fossil fuels. MFCs offer several advantages by employing inorganic molecules instead of traditional catalysts and microorganisms in lieu of enzymes. This study capitalizes on these benefits by utilizing Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, an oxidation bacteria, at the cathode, and a mixed culture of bacteria at the anode within the MFC. This approach leads to improved conductivity and overall system performance. The research delves into the fuel cell system's performance through electrochemical measurements. Furthermore, the study investigates the porphyrin structure of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and unveils the electron transfer mechanism occurring at the cathode.Article An analysis of general surgery theses set up between years 1998-2018 in Turkey: Evidence levels and publication rates of 1996 theses(Turkish Surgical Assoc, 2020) Ferhatoglu, Murat Ferhat; Kivilcim, Taner; Kartal, Abdulcabbar; Filiz, Ali Llker; Kebudi, AbutObjective: Setting up and advocating a thesis is mandatory at the end of the residency training program to become a specialist in general surgery according to the regulations on medical specialization in Turkey. Writing a thesis helps the resident to learn to ask structured questions, assembling the most accurate study design, managing the study process, collecting the results and building a conclusion with medical implications. In this descriptive study, we aimed to investigate the publication rates of the theses written in the field of general surgery and to assess the properties of the published theses. Material and Methods: We performed an online search on September 1, 2018, about the theses of general surgery residents on the website of National Thesis data center of Academic Educational Board in Turkey including theses of medical residents in university-affiliated hospitals and analyzed theses accomplished between 1998-2018. The publication status of the theses was assessed by the entry of author name, the title of the theses and keywords of the theses by using the search engines of PubMed, Google Scholar and Turkish Academic Network and Information Center Turkish Database (ULAKBIM). Data were presented in a descriptive form as absolute numbers and percentages. Results: Between 1998-2018, 1996 theses were completed. 393 (20.5%) of these were published in a journal, and 288 (14.4%) were published in a journal indexed in SCI/SCIE. According to research methodologies, 79.2% of the experimental studies were published in SCI/SCIE indexed journals. Conclusion: Publication rates of the theses in the field of general surgery are low as they are in other specialties of medicine. This descriptive study might give an idea about the low scientific publication rates of general surgery theses. Further studies are needed to understand the underlying factors, which are responsible for this scant scientific performance.Article The Analysis of Investment Decisions of Foreign Exchange Investors from the Perspective of Behavioral Finance(2020) Turgay MÜNYASBehavioral finance is a multidisciplinary sub-branch of finance that seeks to explain the financial decisions of investors by taking advantage of different fields such as sociology, psychology and anthropology.
