Article Aberrant socs3 promoter methylation as a noninvasive diagnostic biomarker for locally advanced prostate cancer;(Logos Medical Publishing, 2020) Demircan Tan,B.; Turan,T.; Yucel,B.; Altundag Kara,S.; Salman Yilmaz,S.; Yildirim,A.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the promoter methylation status of Rasassociated domain family 1A (RASSF1A), O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), Phosphatase with tensin homology (PTEN) and Suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) tumor suppressor genes and evaluate the clinical utility of these genes as noninvasive, bloodbased epigenetic biomarkers for the diagnosis of Prostate Cancer (PCa). Method: A total of 41 consecutive patients and 10 healthy control groups were enrolled in the study. Pyrosequencing was performed to analyze the methylation levels of the promoter regions of the four tumor suppressor genes in patients compared to healthy controls. Results: The promoter methylation levels of RASSF1A, MGMT, PTEN and SOCS3 did not differ between the patient and control groups. However, SOCS3 promoter methylation level was significantly higher for patients having locally advanced PCa compared to those having localized PCa (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our results indicated that SOCS3 could be a useful, noninvasive blood-based epigenetic biomarker for the diagnosis of locally advanced PCa. © Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine.Article An approach to improve the performance of cooperative unmanned vehicle team(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019) Kivanc, Omer CihanIn this paper, a method based on optimal energy management is proposed in order to improve the operational and tactical abilities of collaborative unmanned vehicle teams. Collaborative unmanned systems are used in surveillance, tracking, and military operations. The optimal assignment of these tasks requires cooperation among the vehicles in order to generate a strategy that is efficient with respect to overall mission duration and satisfies all problem constraints. The key motivation behind this paper is to design an unmanned vehicle team that mitigates the disadvantages caused by the structures and characteristics of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are used in these systems. The design steps of the developed system are explained in three sections in a multidisciplinary fashion. In the first section, the optimal energy consumption profile is estimated by simulating the UAV's flight on a Nvidia Jetson TX2 embedded system, located on the UGV. In the second section, a UAV charger design and implementation is done via development of a TMS320F28335 DSP controlled 65 W inductive wireless power transfer circuit, and in the third section an algorithm that calculates the optimal range and route for the user-selected way points using the state of charge of the UAV's LiPo batteries and a preflight simulation using the simulated annealing method are developed. The experiments are performed in real time with an example scenario and the proposed strategy's suitability and effectiveness are verified for cooperative unmanned vehicle teams. Article The effect of static and dynamic core exercises on dynamic balance, spinal stability, and hip mobility in female office workers(Baycinar Medical Publ-baycinar Tibbi Yayincilik, 2020) Orgun, Emre; Kurt, Cem; Ozsu, IlbilgeObjectives: This study aims to compare the effect of static and dynamic core exercises in terms of dynamic balance, spinal stability, and hip mobility in female office workers. Patients and methods: Between May 2018 and June 2018, a total of 34 women (mean age 36.4 +/- 6.5 years; range, 28 to 54 years) who worked for a bank and exercised in the fitness center of the work place were recruited. The women were divided into two groups including 17 women in each as static and dynamic core groups and administered sessions of 20 to 30 min twice a week for six weeks. Both groups were tested for dynamic balance (Y-balance test), spinal stability (functional reach test), and hip mobility (active flexion and extension) before and after six weeks of exercise. Results: A statistically significant improvement was found in both groups between the pre- and post-test results in terms of spinal stability, hip mobility, and dynamic balance (p<0.05). The only exception was the right and left leg anterior balance in the static core group. Dynamic core exercises seemed to be more effective than static core exercises in improving the right and left leg anterior balance. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of spinal stability, hip mobility, and dynamic balance according to the mean absolute change (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our study results indicate that both types of exercises are effective in improving dynamic balance, spinal stability, and hip mobility in female office workers. Therefore, the expected benefits from core exercises are to enhance dynamic balance, spinal stability, and hip mobility. Female workers can perform both types of exercises safely and effectively.Article Effects of tacrolimus on c-fos in hippocampus and memory performances in streptozotocin model of Alzheimer's disease of rats(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2021) Koylu, Ayse; Altunkaynak, Berrin Zuhal; DelIbas, BurcuBackground/aim: Calcineurin, an inhibitor of calcium dependent phosphatase is highly presented in a brain of an Alzheimer's disease. Aging brain gets more sensitive to hyperactivation of calcineurin, and this event causes tau neurofibrillary plaque accumulation, which is one of the outcomes of this disease. The regions of hippocampus are much effected from the results of this process. Our hypothesis is that a calcineurin inhibitor, tacrolimus, could prevent the accumulation and the decrease of the neuronal cells. Therefore, this immunosuppressive drug could be a candidate for an early treatment of Alzheimer disease. Materials and methods: Fifteen male Wistar albino rats were divided to three groups; control, Alzheimer, and Alzheimer+Tacrolimus. The Alzheimer group received an injection of streptozotocin intracerebroventricularly for the purpose of modelling the disease via generating free radicals leading a cognitive impairment. Alzheimer+Tacrolimus group first received an oral drug, a calcineurin inhibitor for 10 days afterwards prepared for the model as same as the Alzheimer group received. Finally, all groups performed the Morris water maze test for four days then sacrificed. For the aim of counting neurons in the hippocampus stereological methods, as well as for an evaluation of cellular response to stress in dentate gyrus, a c-Fos immunohistochemistry was performed. Results: According to the probe trial of Morris water maze test, the latency time was dramatically higher at both Alzheimer and Alzheimer+Tacrolimus group (p < 0.01). We confirmed these results with our stereology data. The results from stereology technique indicate that there was a neuronal decrease at the hippocampus regions in Alzheimer and Alzheimer+Tacrolimus group. Our outcomes from immunohistochemical data showed a significant increase in the number of c-Fos-positive cells in Alzheimer group when comparing with Alzheimer+Tacrolimus group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: There was none preventive effect for neuronal loss in the hippocampus under the effect of tacrolimus drug according to stereological results. However, tacrolimus administration may have reduced cellular stress and cell damage.Article Effects of Three Different Frequencies of Aerobic Physical Activity on Heart and Kidney Tissues in Type 2 Diabetes-Induced Rats(2019) Gulcin BASDEMİR; Guldal GULEC SUYEN; NURAY ALACA; DİLEK ÖZBEYLİ; Hizir KURTEL; SERAP USLUObjective: Exercise has many beneficial effects in the treatment and prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical activities with different frequencies performed within a total total duration of one week on the heart and kidney tissues and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expressions in experimental T2DM model. Method: Rats (n: 30) were divided into sedentary control (SC), sedentary T2DM (SD), T2DM and continuous exercise (DEc, 30 min/day, 5 days/week), T2DM and short bouts exercise (DEsb, 3x10 min/day, 5 days/week), T2DM and weekend warrior exercise (DEww, 35+40 min/day, 2 days/week) groups. Rats were administered streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) and nicotinamide (110 mg/kg) through intraperitoneal route. After 6-weeks of swimming exercise (total duration 150 min/week), biochemical analyzes were performed to measure oral glucose tolerance test, insulin sensitivity and cytokines. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses [VEGF, capillary density, Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β)] were performed in heart and kidney tissues. Results: Compared with sedentary T2DM rats, significant improvements were observed in all exercise groups in terms of blood glucose level, insulin sensitivity, capillary density in heart tissue, VEGF expressions in tissues, TGF-β expressions in kidney tissue and all histopathological analysis (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study shows that physical activity at various frequencies may significantly ameliorate harmful effects of T2DM on heart and kidney tissue without significant differences between exercise frequencies, provided that the total duration of aerobic exercise remains the same (150 min/week).Article Efficiency and Accuracy of Three-Dimensional Models Versus Dental Casts: A Clinical Study(Galenos Publ House, 2019) Yilmaz, Hakan; Ozlu, Fethiye Cakmak; Karadeniz, Carmen; Karadeniz, Ersan IlsayObjective: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of digital and plaster model methods and the time required for analysis. Methods: A total of 30 subjects (20 females, 10 males; mean age, 14.36 +/- 6.30 years), who required plaster models for the construction of either a fixed or a removable orthodontic appliance, were randomly selected. As part of the diagnostic records, digital impressions with a three-dimensional (3D) intra-oral scanner (TriosColor-P13 Shape) were taken from all subjects. Conventional impressions for the orthodontic appliances were taken with alginate (Orthoprint, Zhermack, Italy), and the plaster models were obtained (Scheu-Dental, GmbH.D-58642, Iserlohn, Germany). Two groups were formed. In the conventional measurement group, manual measurements were taken on the plaster models, while in the digital measurement group, the 3Shape OrthoAnalyzer 2013 software was used to make the measurements on the 3D models. In both groups, the total time required to perform the Bolton analysis and space analysis was recorded, and the results were compared. Results: There was no statistically significant difference found between the two groups in terms of the measurement values. The total time to perform all the analyses was determined to be shorter with digital models compared to conventional plaster models (p<0.001). Conclusion: The Bolton analysis and space analysis measurements carried out on 3D models did not show any statistically significant difference compared to plaster models. The time taken to perform the analyses was shorter using digital models than for conventional plaster models.Article Evaluation and Categorization of The Fishing Ports with a Fuzzy Spatial Multi Criteria Approach: The Case of Turkey(Central Fisheries Research inst, 2017) Onden, Ismail; Samasti, Mesut; Canci, Metin; Eldemir, Fahrettin; Aktel, AbdullahFishing ports are the vital constituent of the fishery industry of Turkey. With governmental contribution, the number of the fishing ports reached to 366 alongside of the shores and the collected fish volume has been in increasing trend. However, there are differences in the location characteristics and technical infrastructure so that each facility's success level is measured differently with convenient parameters. To increase the performance of fishing ports, for their better utilization, and also to understand which of them can be transformed to regional centers a classification is needed. With the transformation to the regional centers, i.e. the infrastructure improvements of the facilities and providing multiple services such as tourism and transportation activities; the efficiency of the ports can be increased. In this paper, a classification methodology is developed and it is tested. While applying the methodology, expert workshops are carried out to represent current fishery environment in Turkey. In the meetings, decision criteria are discussed by participating over 200 experts in the field. f-AHP and GIS/Spatial Analysis is used to analyze spatial suitability. Results of the study showed that the methodology is capable of dealing with spatial and non-spatial characteristics of the data-set and determine the convenient alternatives.Article Evaluation of Early Repolarization Pattern in Male Teenage Competitive Athletes and Association With Left Ventricular Remodeling(Aves, 2021) Cetin, Suha; Akgun, Evic Zeynep; Babaoglu, KadirObjective: Early repolarization pattern (ERP) on electrocardiogram is more common among young athletes than in the general population, and has been considered a benign finding. However, ERP has been associated with increased risk of sudden cardiac death. The objectives of this study were to evaluate ERP in teenage athletes; investigate associations between ERP and echocardiographic findings of the left ventricle (LV); and to describe the impact of different sports disciplines on ERP. Methods: ERP was assessed in male teenage athletes from sports institutions for 5 different types of sport--basketball, swimming, football, wrestling, and tennis. All had been training for at least 3 hours per week for over at least 2 years. ERP was defined as J-point elevation >= 1 mV in 2 contiguous and/or lateral leads. A conventional echocardiography was performed in all athletes. Results: ERP was evaluated in 159 athletes with a mean age of 14 (range 10-18 years). It was more common in those training with combined exercise. There was no association between ERP and echocardiographic findings of left ventricular remodeling and geometric pattern. Conclusion: ERP is a frequent finding among teenage athletes. However, frequency varies by sports type, being more common in those training with combined exercise. It is not associated with structural echocardiographic alterations and is primarily seen as an electrophysiological change.Article Evaluation of Internet Information about Lingual Orthodontics Using DISCERN and JAMA Tools(Aves, 2018) Olkun, Hatice Kubra; Demirkaya, Arzu AriObjective: To investigate the quality and reliability of websites providing information about lingual orthodontics in Turkish. Methods: An internet search was conducted on March 6th, 2017, using popular search engines in Turkey: Google (TM), bing (TM), YAHOO !(R), and yandex (R) for the keywords "lingual ortodonti, gorunmeyen braketler, and gorunmeyen teller". The top 10 websites for each keyword and search engine were examined, and duplicates, irrelevant websites, websites showing scientific articles, and orthodontic supplies market sites were excluded. The remaining 58 sites were assessed using the DISCERN instrument and JAMA benchmarks. Results: The authors of the remaining sites were orthodontists (48%) and dentists (5%), while 46% of the websites did not state author names. Ninety-one percent lacked references, and 87% lacked a date. Only 30% were balanced and unbiased. The mean overall DISCERN score was very poor (43%) or poor (40%). Of the 58 websites, 48% (28 sites) met authorship, 7% ] sites) attribution, 71% (41 sites) disclosed website ownership, and 3% (2) currency benchmarks of ]. Conclusion: Information on the internet related to lingual orthodontics is poor. Clinicians should warn patients that information on the internet about lingual orthodontics might be inadequate, and they should direct patients to higher-quality websites.Article Evaluation of the Effects of Orthopedic Treatment on the Dentofacial Structure and Upper Airway of Subjects with Skeletal Class III Malocclusion(Galenos Publishing House, 2024) Ciger, Semra; Kan, Hilâl; Sozen, Tevfik; Öğretmenoğlu, OğuzObjective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and face mask treatment on the upper airway in patients with maxillary retrusion in two dimensions using digital cephalograms and volumetric evaluation using acoustic rhinometric measurements. Methods: A total of 22 individuals with a concave profile and skeletal and dental Class III malocclusion during growth and development with a mean age of 9.9±1.38 years were included in the study. A bonded RME appliance and a petit face mask were adapted for the patients. Before treatment (T0) and after maxillary protraction (T1), lateral cephalometric films and acoustic rhinometric recordings were obtained. The dependent sample t-test was used for statistical evaluation. Results: Cephalometric analysis revealed forward movement of the maxilla and backward downward rotation of the mandible. A significant increase was observed in the nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal regions of the upper airway. Three-dimensional evaluation of the upper airway by acoustic rhinometry revealed only an increase in the volumes of the left nasal cavity after decongestant administration. A statistically significant increase in acoustic rhinometric measurements in nasal valves. When the correlation of the cephalometric findings of the nasopharyngeal region with the acoustic rhinometry findings was examined, no statistically significant relationship was found. Conclusion: As a result of this study, we observed an increase in the cephalometric measurements of the nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal areas. A significant increase was observed in the minimal cross-sectional area measured by acoustic rhinometry.Article Identification of novel TUBB1 variants in patients with macrothrombocytopenia(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2021) Caliskaner, Zihni Onur; Waheed, Abdullah Abdul; Ozturk, Merve Tuzlakoglu; Oymak, Yesim; Tazebay, Uygar Halis; Akar, Nejat; Ozkan, Didem TorunBackground/aim: Macrothrombocytopenia is an autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by increased platelet size and a decreased number of circulating platelets. The membrane skeleton and the link between actin filaments of the skeleton and microtubules, which consist of alpha and beta tubulin [including the tubulin beta-1 chain (TUBB1)] heterodimers, are important for normal platelet morphology, and defects in these systems are associated with macrothrombocytopenia. Materials and methods: In this study, we sequenced the exons of the TUBB1 gene using DNA isolated from the peripheral blood samples of healthy controls (n = 47) and patients with macrothrombocytopenia (n = 37) from Turkey. The TUBB1 expression levels in fractioned blood samples from patients and healthy controls were analyzed by RT-qPCR and Western blot. Microtubule organization of the platelets in the peripheral blood smears of patients, and in mutant TUBB1-transfected HeLa cells, were analyzed by immunofluorescence staining. Results: A new TUBB1 c.803G > T (p.T178T) variant was detected in all of the control and patient samples. Importantly, we found 3 new heterozygous TUBB1 variants predicting amino acid substitutions: G146R (in 1 patient), E123Q (in 1 patient), and T274M (in 4 patients); the latter variant was associated with milder thrombocytopenia in cancer patients treated with paclitaxel. Ectopic expression of TUBB1 T274M/R307H variant in HeLa cells resulted in irregular microtubule organization. Conclusion: Further clinical and functional studies of the newly identified TUBB1 variants may offer important insights into their pathogenicity in macrothrombocytopenia.Article Impact of Orthodontic Treatment Complexity on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Turkish Patients: A Prospective Clinical Study(Aves, 2019) Olkun, Hatice Kubra; Sayar, GulsilayObjective: The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between orthodontic treatment complexity and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and to assess the impact of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment on OHRQoL in orthodontic patients with regard to gender and age. Methods: This prospective clinical study included 102 patients aged 13-35 years who were referred to the orthodontic department. The impact of orthodontic treatment complexity was assessed using the Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON). The Turkish version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used to examine the subjects for OHRQoL before and after treatment. The before and after treatment data (T1 and T2, respectively) were tested using a paired t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the Bonferroni test was used to assess the differences in OHIP-14 across groups, as defined by the ICON. The cross-sectional comparisons between genders and age groups before and after treatment were tested using the Student's t-test. The level of significance was set to a p value of 0.05. Results: Patients with moderate treatment complexity reported a significantly negative impact on the psychological disability domain compared to the difficult treatment complexity. OHRQoL improved after treatment. Females showed statistically significant and highest scores on the physical pain domain compared to males. Adults showed a statistically significant negative impact on the psychological domains before treatment as well as a statistically significant positive impact on the psychological disability domain after treatment compared to adolescents (p<0.05). Conclusion: Orthodontic treatment improves OHRQoL, and orthodontic treatment complexity does not seem to have an impact on OHRQoL.Article An integrated approach for the development of an electric vehicle powertrain: design, analysis, and implementation(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2018) Ustun, Ozgur; Tuncay, Ramazan Nejat; Mokukcu, Mert Safa; Kivanc, Omer Cihan; Tosun, Gurkan; Gokce, Can; Cakan, MuratElectric motor and power electronic systems are essential elements for the performance and efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles. The inadequacy of the range due to battery limitations is compensated by powertrain solutions and innovative control algorithms. Future targets of electric powertrains are mostly based on weight, space, and efficiency issues. Highly efficient low-volume and lightweight propulsion systems increase the performance of EVs and also enhance their importance as an alternative to internal combustion engine vehicles. In this paper, a detailed propulsion system design study is presented by considering all of the important constraints of the electric powertrain. The design criteria and output, which are opposites of each other, are submitted in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. The tests of all constraints are conducted as a whole and discretely and then the effects of electrical machine and power electronics circuits are presented.Letter Investigation of Trace Element and Toxic Metal Blood Levels in Obese Children(2025) Kılıç, SinanDear Editor, Childhood obesity has become a major public health concern with increasing prevalence worldwide. Recent studies increasingly focus on the association between childhood obesity and environmental pollutants, exploring potential contributory pathways and mechanisms underlying this relationship. In a study published in the Turkish Archives of Pediatrics in 2024, we conducted an analysis of 50 obese children (26 girls, 24 boys) and a control group of 50 non-obese children (23 girls, 27 boys). Our findings indicated a significant reduction in levels of iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and cobalt (Co) among obese children, alongside a notable elevation in cop- per (Cu), lead (Pb), and manganese (Mn) levels.1 The study’s limitation is that while body weights were comparable across both groups, trace element blood levels did not follow a normal distribution, which should be considered in future research. Subsequent studies are encouraged to address weight discrepancies between obese and control groups and incorporate analyses that account for non-normally distributed data.Article Investigation of Trace Element Levels and Toxic Metals in Obese Children: A Single-Center Experience(AVES, 2024) Kılıç, Sinan; Kaba, SultanObjective: The complete role of factors contributing to the pathogenesis of childhood obesity remains to be fully elucidated. Limited research has addressed trace elements in the context of child obesity. Our objective was to assess trace element and lead (Pb), copper (Cu) (are toxic metal) levels in both healthy and obese children, and to investigate the potential correlations between these elements and obesity-related anthropometric measurements, lipid profiles, as well as insulin and glucose levels. Materials and Methods: Furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry was employed to measure the concentrations of trace elements in the serum. Additionally, fasting glucose, insu- lin, and lipid levels were determined in obese children (body mass index ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex), along with 50 healthy children. Only the obesity group underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Results: Significantly reduced levels of Fe, Mg, Zn, and Co were observed in obese children, whereas Cu, Pb, and Mn levels were elevated (P < .001, P <.001, P = .002, P = .008, P <.001, P = .001, P = .007, respectively). Significant positive correlations were found between the 2-hour glucose level in OGTT and Mn (P = .013), as well as between peak insulin and insulin levels at the 30th and 60th minutes, and Fe (P = .001, P = .025, P = .001). Conclusion: This study indicates that an imbalance in trace element levels and the accumula- tion of Pb may be associated with obesity, while levels of Mn and Fe may be linked to glucose intolerance.Article NATO’nun balistik füze Savunma Sistemi ve Türkiye(2012) Kibaroğlu, MustafaABD, Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönemde Kuzey Kore ve İran gibi ülkelerin balistik füze kapasitelerinin gelişmesinin yarattığı tehdit karşısında Ulusal Füze Savunma Sistemi konuşlandırma projesine hız verdi. For the fractional-order generalisation, the well-known Caputo fractional derivative is used with the singular-type kernel. The basic features of the proposed integer- and fractional-order models are defined by using well-known mathematical concepts. The proposed model is numerically solved by using the Chebyshev spectral collocation scheme. Some graphical justifications are also given to visualise the disease transmission in the population of citrus plants over time. This research study contains the first non-linear mathematical model of citrus canker transmission, which is the main novelty of this article. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article A novel crimping technique approach for high power white good plugs(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2022) Kivanc, Omer Cihan; Ozgonenel, Okan; Bostan, Omer; Guzel, Sahin; Demirsoy, MertThe crimping process is essential to human health and the durability of devices, especially in domestic appliances. Moreover, terminal crimping is critical to the safe transmission of electricity; incorrect crimping leads to problems including overheating of the plug, power loss, arc, and failure of the mechanical connection. In recent years, analysis has been performed by the finite element method (FEM) to prevent the incorrect design of crimping and to develop higher performance crimping techniques. A novel crimping technique for domestic appliances requiring high-powered plugs is proposed in this study. After defining the crimp parameters and the materials that are used for the crimp design, optimization is undertaken by using an analytical solver that uses both numerical calculation and finite element method analysis by COMSOL (TM) and Hyperworks. Prototypes are manufactured based on the result of the research, and capability analysis is performed using a histogram diagram. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed crimping technique for high-powered applications are validated by simulation and experimental studies.Article Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Is Associated With Impaired Pulmonary Artery Distensibility and Right Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2018) Cetin, Suha; Vural, Mustafa Gokhan; Firat, Hikmet; Akdemir, RamazanBackground/aim: We investigated whether obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) has any impact on pulmonary artery distensibility (PAD) and right ventricular (RV) function. Materials and methods: Subjects were categorized according to apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) as follows: controls (n = 17 and AHI < 5), mild-to-moderate OSAS (n = 22 and AHI = 5-30), and severe OSAS (n = 29 and AHI > 30). All subjects underwent transthoracic echocardiography after polysomnography to assess PAD and RV function. PAD was recorded as M-Mode trace of the right pulmonary artery and was defined as (PAmax-PAmin/PAmin) x 100. S' was measured by means of TDI of the lateral annulus of the RV using apical four-chamber view. Results: Patients with severe OSAS demonstrated impaired RV longitudinal systolic function (S') compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). Impaired pulmonary vasculature elastic properties as reflected by decreased PAD were more prevalent in severe OSAS (26.2 +/- 5.7%) compared to the controls (29.9 +/- 4.6%; P < 0.05) and mild-to-moderate OSAS (29.0 +/- 4.1%; P < 0.05). An inverse relation between PAD (P < 0.05), RV myocardial performance index (MPI) (P < 0.05), and AHI was demonstrated. S' also correlated with PAD (P < 0.05). Conclusion: PAD is a significant tool to evaluate pulmonary vasculature stiffening and is well correlated with disease severity in OSAS. Further, impaired PAD may lead to RV systolic dysfunction.
