Abstract
The Hobbit has an important place in both children's literature and fantastic literature. As a children's book and fantastic novel, The Hobbit has a universe called 'Middle-Earth', which is specific to Tolkien's novels. Tolkien establishes a specific universe to make his fantastic novels more credible and thus uses culture-specific items together with fantasy features. Additionally, he uses many descriptions, personifications, metaphors, colloquial speeches, idioms, dialogues, and dialects to imply different races and characters in this universe. The expressive language and culture-specific items give character to his style, which makes the reading experience interesting for children. The focal point of the thesis is on the comparative examination of the expressive language and culture-specific items in the Turkish translations within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and retranslation hypothesis.
