Abstract
Background: The aim of cross-sectional and survey based this study is to investigate the dental anxiety levels of individuals who apply to the dentist for treatment or control, to evaluate the factors affecting dental fear and the effect of dental fear on oral hygiene habits and quality of life. Methods: 380 individuals (187 man, 193 female) referred to İstanbul Okan University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Periodontology were included in our study and a questionnaire form evaluating socio-demographic and dental care behaviors were applied. MDAS test was used to evaluate the dental anxiety and OHIP-14 test was used to evaluate the effect of dental anxiety on the quality of life. Results: There was significant relationship between dental anxiety level and gender, oral care habit, last dental visit, previous traumatic experiences. There was statistically significant positive relationship between high score OHIP-14 and high score MDAS. The level of education of individuals who participated in the study had a statistically significant effect on tooth brushing habits and the rate of regular dental visits. Conclusion: In our study, while dental anxiety was lower in patients who visited the dentist in the last year; patients who had undergone a negative dental treatment were found to have high dental anxiety. It was observed that patients with low dental anxiety had regular tooth brushing habits. High OHIP-14 scores were obtained in the patient group with high dental anxiety. © 2021, Selcuk University.
